Life on 1/10th the fossil fuels turns out to be awesome. We all want to be happy. Yet as we consume ever more in a frantic bid for happiness, global warming worsens. Alarmed by drastic changes now occurring in the Earth's climate systems, the author, a climate scientist and suburban father of two, embarked on a journey to change his life and the world. He began by bicycling, growing food, meditating, and making other simple, fulfilling changes. Ultimately, he slashed his climate impact to under a tenth of the US average and became happier in the process. Being the Change explores the connections between our individual daily actions and our collective predicament. It merges science, spirituality, and practical action to develop a satisfying and appropriate response to global warming. Part one exposes our interconnected predicament: overpopulation, global warming, industrial agriculture, growth-addicted economics, a sold-out political system, and a mindset of separation from nature. It also includes a readable but authoritative overview of climate science. Part two offers a response at once obvious and unprecedented: mindfully opting out of this broken system and aligning our daily lives with the biosphere. The core message is deeply optimistic: living without fossil fuels is not only possible, it can be better. Peter Kalmus is an atmospheric scientist at Caltech / Jet Propulsion Laboratory with a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University. He lives in suburban Altadena, California with his wife and two children on 1/10th the fossil fuels of the average American.

Nonprofit organizations continue to reduce staff, programs, and hours of operation; all in the name of survival. Some have not survived. Some organizations try to attract new audiences, at times sacrificing their missions to do so. All compete for a share of diminishing government, corporate and private funding sources. Dr. Frederick A. Lambert, who has taught management and organizational leadership on the undergraduate and graduate levels, relies on the principles of total quality management to help your nonprofit organization excel, rather than merely survive. You can learn how to • build a foundation that promotes success; • craft and pursue a strategic plan; • create and sustain a culture of quality; • put the customer first no matter what; • develop leaders who will create and sustain organizational growth and success. Nonprofit organizations continue to hire consultants, merge with other organizations, and downsize in the name of survival. But most of them wouldn’t need to do any of these things if they focused on executing on the strategies in Being the Best.

Connecting to the inner self is the best means to overcome adversity. The book is a guide to self-realization so as to make optimal decisions to prevent being overwhelmed by an oppressive situation. Freedom is a state of mind. One must begin by making changes within the self to realize the depth of ones freedom. Self-realized thoughts overcome trials and tribulations. These transform actions based in reasoned solutions. Active learning, self correction in self-love helps achieve optimal thoughts. Inner consciousness improves actions that withstand adversity. If the divine liturgy really is as beautiful as we claim, wouldn’t more people attend? Wouldn’t the church grow? Driven by our desire for growth, we count, we analyze, we make charts, and we strategize, but often with few discernible results. That is probably the result of focusing on secondary aspects of church life. As we know, the very existence of a church is a gift of God’s presence and not the result of any particular actions taken by human beings. For that reason, church is primarily about being something rather than doing or achieving something. So the growth of the church is not reflected in ever-increasing numbers, dollars, and activities, but rather in steadily growing conformity to the divine ideal. So in order to evaluate ecclesial growth, we will first have to ask what the church is supposed to be. One answer to that question is captured in the four marks of the church given in the creed: Oneness, Holiness, Catholicity, and Apostolicity. These four characteristics serve as a matrix or framework within which we can focus on the primary aspects of ecclesial being and help it grow and become what it was intended to be.

When accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Martin Luther King said ¿I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.¿ Every day, people are working diligently, and largely anonymously, to make Dr. King¿s credo a reality. BEING THE CHANGE profiles such individuals, and shows how anyone can find something inside themselves to give to others and to the community, while offering practical information for readers who want to get involved.
