I have found the Lord putting it into my heart quite strongly to say something about the service of God; and I think we can gather it under that first clause - “Behold, my servant.” Of course, here the words are prophetically related to the Lord Jesus. There is no doubt about that, because they are actually quoted ... “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, Behold, my servant whom I have chosen; my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased”; and there are other passages in the New Testament which are a repetition, in part of these very words. ...He, the Lord Jesus, became the great, inclusive, model servant of the Lord, fulfilled the service, and then passed it on to the Church. There is a very real and quite true sense in which Christ and His Body, the Church, now is the servant of the Lord, so, that it can be said - or should be able to be said - of Christ in the Church “Behold, my servant”; that is, as to Divine principle and purpose.

The Baptism Of Jesus The Christ

Author : Ralph Allan Smith

The baptism of Jesus by John the Baptizer is one of the theologically richest narratives in the Gospels, touching the transition from the old to the new covenant, the doctrines of water and Holy Spirit baptism, and the doctrine of the Trinity, to name only the most significant of topics. In The Baptism of Jesus the Christ, Ralph Allan Smith addresses each of these areas, aiming in particular to respond to James D. G. Dunn's view that Jesus' baptism and the gift of the Spirit are fundamentally distinct events, to revive John Calvin's view of the baptism of Jesus as central to understanding Christian baptism, and to suggest directions for re-thinking the doctrine of God's attributes in the light of the fully personal interaction of Father, Son, and Spirit reflected in the baptismal narrative.

The Christology Of John Owen

The object of Dr Owen in this treatise is to illustrate the mystery of divine grace in the person of Christ. It bears the title, ""The Christology of John Owen;"" but it differs considerably from modern works of the same title or character. It is not occupied with a formal induction from Scripture in proof of the supreme Godhead of the Saviour. Owen assumes the truth of this doctrine, and applies all his powers and resources to expound its relations in the Christian system, and its bearings on Christian duty and experience.
