Ceramics And Globalization

Author : Neil Ewins

Neil Ewins' study of the Staffordshire potteries in a period of great global change traces how ceramics production has been affected by globalisation in both familiar and unexpected ways. Although many manufacturers such as Wedgwood initially moved production to cheaper labour markets in East Asia, others remained in or returned to England once it became clear that outsourcing manufacturing was affecting the brand value and customer perception of their products. Neil Ewins explores the complex behaviour of the UK ceramics industry, using a combination of evidence from the press, trade journals, ceramic objects, and primary interview evidence of manufacturers, retailers and a ceramic designer. Ewins suggests that, although the surface designs of UK ceramics invariably reflect diverse cultural and stylistic influences, a notion of authenticity often still resides in the place and context in which the ceramic product was originally made. Overall, the book argues that UK ceramics remain culturally complex because of issues of supply and demand, and ties to heritage, imagined or otherwise. Within a context of globalization, the book highlights compelling issues which have huge ramifications on UK manufacturing futures.

Reading tea leaves is a traditional divinatory method passed on through generations. The Cup of Destiny reveals the secrets of this ancient method, allowing you to make predictions for yourself and your friends. This kit includes a beautiful, decorated cup and saucer for making readings, and an illustrated book explaining how to interpret the patterns you will find in your cup. The first part of the book describes the ritual of turning the cup counter-clockwise and draining the left-over tea into the saucer. It goes on to explain the meanings of over 200 of the signs and symbols you are likely to see in the leaves when making a reading. The explanations accompanying these allow you to relate them to real events and future possibilities, providing clear insights which can be startlingly accurate: a heart near the rim of the cup means that love is not far away, while a cake may signify a celebration or a party. So, have a cup of tea and see what the leaves have to say about your future!

The Scarlet Lancers

Author : James Lunt

The 16th/5th Queen's Royal Lancers have long had the reputation of being one of the most efficient, and at the same time one of the least flamboyant, of the British cavalry regiments. The regiment, as it exists today, is the product of the amalgamation after the Great War of two cavalry regiments whose combined battle honours bear witness to their distinguished services. It was first raised as the Royal Dragoons of Ireland, and more recently has returned in triumph from the Gulf War, prior to which not one member of the regiment had seen action, apart from tours in Northern Ireland. In writing this history of the regiment he once commanded, General Lunt offers evidence of the continuing value of tradition and esprit de corps on which the regimental system of the British Army has for so long been based.

Excerpt: Grace Slick (born Grace Barnett Wing; October 30, 1939) is an American singer, songwriter, and former model, best known as one of the lead singers of the rock groups The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, and Starship, as well as for her work as a solo artist from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. Slick was an important figure in the 1960s psychedelic rock movement, known for her witty lyrics and powerful contralto vocals. Grace Barnett Wing was born in Evanston, Illinois, to Ivan W. Wing (1907-1987) and Virginia (nee Barnett; 1910-1984), the latter a direct descendant of passengers of the Mayflower). In 1949, a month before her tenth birthday, her brother Chris Wing was born. Her father was transferred several times when she was a child and, in addition to the Chicago area, she lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco before her family finally settled in Palo Alto, California, south of San Francisco, in the early 1950s. She attended Palo Alto Senior High School before switching to Castilleja High School, a private all-girls school in Palo Alto. Following graduation she attended Finch College in New York from 1957 to 1958 and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, from 1958-1959. Slick's music career started in 1965 in San Francisco when she and her then husband Jerry Slick formed their own band, influenced by The Beatles as well as by a performance by the freshly-formed Jefferson Airplane at The Matrix and who, Slick realized, maintained an impressive revenue in comparison to her earnings as a model while having fun performing. Slick and her husband, her then...
