In the Middle Ages, navigation relied upon a delicate balance between art and science. Whilst respecting the customs and the precautions of their forbearers, sailors had to count on their knowledge of the stars, the winds, the currents, and even of migratory flights. They also used hand-painted maps, which, although certainly summary, were marvellously well-drawn. In following the saga of old sailors, from Eric Le Rouge to Robert Peary, Donald Wigal leads us in discovering the New World. This magnificent overview of maps dating from the 10th to the 18th centuries, often ‘primitive’ and sometimes difficult to understand, retraces the progress of cartography and shows the incredible courage of men who endeavoured to conquer the seas with tools whose geographical accuracy often left much to be desired.

"NAVAL & MARITIME HISTORY: A BIBLIOGRAPHY made its first appearance in 1951 as a mimeographed supplement to Professor Robert G. Albion's courses at Harvard University. Thereafter it was his practice over the years to bring out supplements or to compile completely new editions at regular intervals. Upon the publication of the fourth edition in 1972 by the Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport Museum, Professor Albion turned to new projects until his energies gradually waned with advancing age. After Albion's death in 1983 the present compiler determined to put together a new supplement. Although other duties have brought delays, the project is now finished. This supplement adds some 2,000 works published since mid-1971 to the more than 5,000 titles that comprise the fourth edition. Like its predecessor, the present volume includes only books and dissertations in English, arranged in the topical groups set up by Albion years ago."

The French Revolution sent shock waves through Europe, as the continent's remaining monarchs tried to stamp out the tide of republicanism. France was surrounded by enemies but fought them off, largely through the achievements of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Republic's youngest general. Within a decade he had become Consul, First Consul, and finally Emperor, creating a new dynasty and a new order in Europe. From 1803 until 1809 he seemed unbeatable, vanquishing his foes one after another. But his invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous, and he soon faced a growing coalition of enemy powers. His defeat at the Battle of Waterloo marked the close of the Napoleonic Era, but not the end of the Napoleonic legend. This marvelous, full-color book charts Napoleon's rise and fall and analyzes the weaponry and rival armies that were to transform nineteenth-century Europe. It includes over 160 superb illustrations, many of which have never previously been published, and maps that have been specially commissioned for the book.

"In the vast literature of the Second World War there has never been a naval atlas showing graphically the complexities of the war at sea, a war which spread across every ocean. This new book will fill the gap. With more than 225 beautifully-designed maps and charts, the atlas sets out to visualise the great campaigns and major battles as well as the smaller operations, amphibious landings, convoys, sieges, skirmishes and sinkings. While whole sections are given over to the Pacific war, the battle of the Atlantic and the campaigns in the Mediterranean, smaller but crucial events such as the landings at Dieppe receive in-depth treatment. The maps depict the dynamics of campaigns and battles but also include extensive information on the opposing forces, their ships and equipment and the strategic significance of events. General thematic maps, for instance, on ship losses, aerial strengths or convoy routes, give the reader an understanding of the many contributing factors that shaped the tactics and strategies of the Allied and Axis forces. No other work has attempted such an ambitious coverage of the war at sea in this period and it is destined to become a definitive reference work for naval enthusiasts and historians as well as general readers fascinated by the naval war that extended from the coldest arctic seas to the tropical islands of the Pacific."--Back cover.
