The Thirty Years War (1618-48) was the most destructive European conflict prior to the twentieth century. It reduced the population of central Europe by around a quarter and left thousands of towns and villages in ruins. This uniquely comprehensive collection of translated documents covers all aspects of the war in the words and images of those who directly experienced it, from the key political and military decision-makers, through the middling ranks of officers and envoys to the masses of ordinary soldiers and civilians, laity and clergy, women and men. Most of the material appears in English for the first time, including a variety of previously unpublished archival sources, all reproduced in their full original length. The wide range of sources covered includes: • state documents • treatises • diplomatic and private correspondence • diaries • financial records • artistic evidence Thematically organised, the material is supported by an authoritative introduction, a guide to further reading and a full chronology, as well as extensive annotations explaining terms and points of detail. The rich source material and essential context that this book provides make it an invaluable resource for students and anyone interested in European and military history.

A grand sweeping military history of the “pike and shot” era, with a particular emphasis on the Thirty Years’ War in Europe (1618–1648). Originally published in two volumes, the first covers the life of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, and known as “The Lion of the North” by his many opponents. Born into an era of constant warfare, he became king at 17, transformed the Army of Sweden into the first truly modern military machine, and led it in person for twenty years until his untimely death at the battle of Lützen. His innovations in training, equipment, and tactics made Sweden the dominant Baltic power for the next one hundred years, and have earned him the title of the “father of modern warfare.” The second volume explores the many battles of other great generals of the era, including Tilly, Wallenstein, Turenne, Condé, Eugene, and Marlborough. Theodore Ayrault Dodge’s illustrated history was first published in 1895, as part of his “Great Captains” series. This ebook edition combines both volumes, and includes an active table of contents, reflowable text, and nearly 250 line drawings and battle maps.

One of Daniel Defoe's greatest achievements was the writing and publication of his "Review". Covering his many interests, both contemporary and historical, Defoe published his journal twice and latterly three times a week. The print run was thought to be just 400 therefore making surviving runs very rare. Also the condition of the originals is mainly poor making a facsimile version difficult. This edition has been completely reset and annotated. Publishing two volumes to cover one year's output, the whole of Defoe's text is to be reproduced in 18 volumes. Each year will have an introduction, textual notes and new index. The final volume in the series will have a consolidated index.
