Advanced numerical simulations that use adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) methods have now become routine in engineering and science. Originally developed for computational fluid dynamics applications these methods have propagated to fields as diverse as astrophysics, climate modeling, combustion, biophysics and many others. The underlying physical models and equations used in these disciplines are rather different, yet algorithmic and implementation issues facing practitioners are often remarkably similar. Unfortunately, there has been little effort to review the advances and outstanding issues of adaptive mesh refinement methods across such a variety of fields. This book attempts to bridge this gap. The book presents a collection of papers by experts in the field of AMR who analyze past advances in the field and evaluate the current state of adaptive mesh refinement methods in scientific computing.

Addressing students and researchers as well as practitioners of scientific computing, this book describes the state of the art in the development of high-resolution schemes based on the Flux-Corrected Transport (FCT) paradigm. Intended for readers who have a solid background in Computational Fluid Dynamics, the book begins with a historical note by D.L. Book. Review articles then describe various algorithmic aspects (efficient implementation of the proposed high-resolution schemes, choice of parameters and other practical tips). The topics addressed in the book and its main highlights include: the derivation and analysis of classical FCT schemes emphasizing the physical and mathematical constraints as well as flux limiting for hyperbolic systems; its generalization to implicit time-stepping and finite element discretizations on unstructured meshes; applications to Monotonically Integrated Large Eddy Simulation (MILES) of turbulent flows and for designing alternative high-resolution schemes. Further material concerns clipping and terracing, the use of characteristic variables in multidimensions and the discussions on prelimiting/steepening, 'failsafe' adjustment, and iterative flux correction. Many numerical examples are presented as academic test problems and large-scale applications alike. TOC:The Conception, Gestation, Birth and Infancy of FCT.- On the Design of Flux-Corrected Transport Algorithms.- 30 Years of FCT: Status and Directions; On Monotonically Integrated Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows Based on FCT Algorithms.- Large Scale Urban Simulation with FCT.- Algebraic Flux Correction I. Scalar Conservation Laws.- Algebraic Flux Correction II. Compressible Euler Equations.- Algebraic Flux Correction III. Incompressible Flow Problems

On the occasion of the International Conference on Nonlinear Hyperbolic Problems held in St. Etienne, France, 1986 it was decided to start a two years cycle of conferences on this very rapidly expanding branch of mathematics and it·s applications in Continuum Mechanics and Aerodynamics. The second conference toolc place in Aachen, FRG, March 14-18, 1988. The number of more than 200 participants from more than 20 countries all over the world and about 100 invited and contributed papers, well balanced between theory, numerical analysis and applications, do not leave any doubt that it was the right decision to start this cycle of conferences, of which the third will be organized in Sweden in 1990. ThiS volume contains sixty eight original papers presented at the conference, twenty two cif them dealing with the mathematical theory, e.g. existence, uniqueness, stability, behaviour of solutions, physical modelling by evolution equations. Twenty two articles in numerical analysis are concerned with stability and convergence to the physically relevant solutions such as schemes especially deviced for treating shoclcs, contact discontinuities and artificial boundaries. Twenty four papers contain multidimensional computational applications to nonlinear waves in solids, flow through porous media and compressible fluid flow including shoclcs, real gas effects, multiphase phenomena, chemical reactions etc. The editors and organizers of the Second International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems would lilce to thanlc the Scientific Committee for the generous support of recommending invited lectures and selecting the contributed papers of the conference.

This millennium will see the increased use of parallel computing technologies at all levels of mainstream computing. Most computer hardware will use these technologies to achieve higher computing speeds, high speed access to very large distributed databases and greater flexibility through heterogeneous computing. These developments can be expected to result in the extended use of all types of parallel computers in virtually all areas of human endeavour. Compute-intensive problems in emerging areas such as financial modelling and multimedia systems, in addition to traditional application areas of parallel computing such as scientific computing and simulation, will stimulate the developments. Parallel computing as a field of scientific research and development will move from a niche concentrating on solving compute-intensive scientific and engineering problems to become one of the fundamental computing technologies. This book gives a retrospective view of what has been achieved in the parallel computing field during the past three decades, as well as a prospective view of expected future developments.
