This is the story of the legendary International Game Fish Association, one of the most remarkable tales in all of sport. Founded on the eve of war in 1939, the IGFA provided critical assistance to the Allied war effort and went on to redefine angling with rod and reel. Today, its rules and records are recognized by all of sport fishing and its commitment to sporting ethics has been embraced by anglers around the world. Big-Game Fishing Headquarters: A History of the IGFA is the compelling history of the evolution of the IGFA, the flowering of big-game fishing, and the people, places and fish that played major roles in both.

The foundations of fly-fishing history, literature, and mechanics are firmly anchored in the disciplines of science, yet until now there has been no comprehensive work that integrates scientific components into the sport of angling for trout and other game fish. The Science of Fly-Fishing fills that void. Stan L. Ulanksi presents the basic elements of the physical and biological sciences in a way that helps the reader see their practical application to fishing. The Science of Fly-Fishing is designed for anglers—whether they have any formal background in science or not—who are curious about the relevance of science to their sport. The angling-related scientific concepts revealed in the book require no more of the reader than a good dose of common sense and a willingness to expand his or her fly-fishing knowledge. Ulanski’s thoughtful explorations of topics such as the physics of fly casting, the angler’s environment, the diet of trout, and the role of lake geology and biology will help anglers reach a greater understanding of and appreciation for the natural aquatic home of their quarry. Stan L. Ulanski is Professor of Geology and Environmental Science at James Madison University.

LAKE AND STREAM GAME FISHING - A Practical Book on the Popular Fresh-Water, Game Fish, the Tackle Necessary and How to Use It - BY DIXIE CARROLL - 1919 - PREFACE - In writing this book of fish, fishing, tackle and how to use it, as well as incidental remarks on equipment it is not the intention of the writer to set it up on a pinnacle as a hollier than thou book. Opinions on tackIe and the method of using it are varied and at times wonderful. There are purists in every angle of the sport and by each method of angling the purist in that particular line wiIl swear by the nine gods and at times swear at and other methods. I have never allied myself to any one particular part of angling. I can have equally as much enjoy- ment from tossing the plug, live bait or feathery fly. As Iong as it is fishing in a sportsman-like manner with line, rod and reel and playing the fish until it comes up to the net or gaff, white-side up, I consider the game true sport and worthy of just con- sideration. As to the methods of angling and the handling of tackle advocated herein, they are the methods that I have found to be successful from actual experiences of my own or from the experiences of other fisher- men with tvhorn I have cast and whipped lake and stream. As to the information on the habits and peculiari- ties of the different game fish, this I have accumulated since my early fishing days passed an the Potomac and its tributaries, and from close association with keen guides and woodsmen of the North Woods country. I feel that the fishing game is on the verge of becoming the most popular of out-doors sports and it can be made so, not only for the present day, but for the years to come, if the fishermen will follow the creed of the American Anglers League of which I have the honor of being president. This creed follows and I earnestly hope fishermen will burn this thought into their memory and in time................

Well-known nature and conservation writer Ted Williams is an avid fisherman who has devoted many years to writing about the sport and advocating the preservation of bodies of water and species of fish. Here, he brings together his love of angling with his profound sense of responsibility for the environment. Most of the work in this anthology is adapted from articles originally published in Audubon and Fly Rod & Reel (where Williams is conservation editor), and these lively, perceptive pieces take readers across the United States and around the world: trout fishing in Patagonia; bonefishing on South Andros Island in the Bahamas; and tuna fishing off the coast of Massachusetts. Williams’ passion and commitment will inspire fishermen everywhere. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
