Learning surgery has become a daunting task. Although the basic surgical c- cepts remain durable and unchanged, the past several years have brought rapid growth of new knowledge in all of the surgical disciplines. Some surgical pro- dures have disappeared. Peptic ulcer disease and portal hypertension were once the source of a plethora of surgical interventions; now surgery is rarely necessary for either. New interventions have been developed. Gastric bypass for morbid obesity, once a rare procedure, has become one of the most commonly performed pro- dure. New technology has made operations less invasive but more complex and the knowledge requirements for new technology are very different than that required for conventional surgery. The Illustrated Handbook of General Surgery has been created to allow medical students and residents learning surgery to assimilate, in a rapid and succinct manner, the anatomy and operative techniques associated with the most common surgical interventions. We are proud that all of the chapters have been edited and c- tributed by the faculty of the University of Wisconsin. The Department of Surgery at UW is comprised of almost 80 faculty, with nationally recognized expertise in every specialty. The essence of this text is its portability as well as its conciseness.

Beyond this, the softly colored illustrations are aesthetically pleasing and invite reading of the accompanying narrative....In sum, while the ninth edition of Zollinger's Atlas of Surgical Operations differs from the early editions in many ways, it nonetheless evokes the enduring qualities of its predecessors and will guide yet another generation of surgeons."--JAMA For more than half-a-century, Zollinger’s Atlas of Surgical Operations has been the gold-standard reference for learning how to perform the most common surgical procedures using safe, well-established techniques. The ninth edition continues this tradition of excellence with the addition of color illustrations and coverage of more than 230 procedures, including many of the most important laparoscopic operations. Following the proven effective design of previous editions, each procedure is fully explained on two pages. Safe surgery is founded upon careful dissection and clear identification of vital structures. Knowledge of the appropriate anatomy and anatomical relations is therefore essential, not only during surgical training, but as the cornerstone of surgical practice. The aim of this book is to describe the essential anatomical basis of a range of common procedures in general and vascular surgery. The large-format multi-volume texts on operative surgery, despite their undoubted excellence, are now too expensive for individual purchase. Single-volume books on operative surgery have been unable to devote sufficient attention to anatomical detail and the surgeon is left ploughing through anatomy texts, often failing to find illustrations which demonstrate clearly the features that are important in an operative dissection. The present text highlights features of the operations which are important anatomically while not attempting to give a complete description of the operative procedure. A combination of line diagrams and cross sections has been used to provide the topographical detail. The volume is aimed mainly at surgeons in training, to help them on a day-to day basis and to provide a text which will be useful in revising for post graduate examinations in surgery. It is also hoped that the book will be of use to practising surgeons, providing an easy means of highlighting important anatomical aspects of the procedures they perform relatively infrequently. 1989 S.J.S.

Excerpt from A Text-Book of Operative Surgery, Covering the Surgical Anatomy and Operative Technic Involved in the Operations of General Surgery: Written for Students and Practitioners The clinical aspect of Operative Surgery has been less fully dealt with and in generalizations in connection with groups of operations, rather than specifically in connection with individual operations. An apology for the amount of Anatomy given may seem, to some, meces sary. From the standpoint of the pure technician, Operative Surgery is, largely, Applied Anatomy - the application of the facts of Surgical Anatomy during the progress of Surgical Manipulations - the resulting Operative Technic being more or less perfect as the knowledge of the Surgical Anatomy and the conduction of the Surgical Manipulations are more or less perfect. Theoretically, it is proper to expect fourth - year Students to come into the Operating Room with their Anatomy in an available form for surgical work - practically, this is rarely found - and is often absent in seasoned Operators.
