In Beginning Big Data with Power BI and Excel 2013, you will learn to solve business problems by tapping the power of Microsoft’s Excel and Power BI to import data from NoSQL and SQL databases and other sources, create relational data models, and analyze business problems through sophisticated dashboards and data-driven maps. While Beginning Big Data with Power BI and Excel 2013 covers prominent tools such as Hadoop and the NoSQL databases, it recognizes that most small and medium-sized businesses don’t have the Big Data processing needs of a Netflix, Target, or Facebook. Instead, it shows how to import data and use the self-service analytics available in Excel with Power BI. As you’ll see through the book’s numerous case examples, these tools—which you already know how to use—can perform many of the same functions as the higher-end Apache tools many people believe are required to carry out in Big Data projects. Through instruction, insight, advice, and case studies, Beginning Big Data with Power BI and Excel 2013 will show you how to: Import and mash up data from web pages, SQL and NoSQL databases, the Azure Marketplace and other sources. Tap into the analytical power of PivotTables and PivotCharts and develop relational data models to track trends and make predictions based on a wide range of data. Understand basic statistics and use Excel with PowerBI to do sophisticated statistical analysis—including identifying trends and correlations. Use SQL within Excel to do sophisticated queries across multiple tables, including NoSQL databases. Create complex formulas to solve real-world business problems using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).

In this workbook/guide, we will explain Power BI features that can be used to create a Dashboard of different Visual Reports. We will take students through a step-by-step process displaying all major capabilities. The final step will require posting the Dashboard on the internet to be shared with others. Power BI is integrated with Excel and evolved from Excel Add-Ins including PowerPivot, PowerQuery, PowerView, and PowerMap. You will see many similarities in Excel and Power BI, but the features in Power BI are much better integrated with many different data sources. Power BI is the next step in analyzing information and integrating data. However, Excel is still needed to build mathematical formulas as well as build charts and PivotTables. Power BI can also be used provide analysis from a Dashboard technology perspective. The following are the steps to be covered: Get Data - This will extract the data source from a database such as Excel, Access, etc. Query Editor - This will allow us to review the data extracted and filter or remove specific records prior to saving it to the Power BI file. Data View - This will allow us to review the structure of the data extracted and add additional fields as needed. These new fields can be used for establishing relationships or creating new fields. Relationships - This will allow different tables to display how data is tied together. Storing all data in a single table isn't as efficient as storing data in separate tables containing specific information. Visual Report - This will generate different reports describing the data from different tables. These reports will include Charts, Matrix, Tables, Summary Information, Maps, etc. Filter Report - Once you create a report, it can be Filtered to display desired information. Format Report - Once you create a report, it can be Formatted to display the desired layout. Publish Report - Once reports are complete, they can be Published to a web browser version of Power BI and shared with others on the internet. Create A Dashboard - Once reports are Published, they can be organized into a Dashboard layout for others to preview. Specific Dashboards can be created describing a different set of data in each of the tables. Finally, we will discuss related tools and downloads including Power BI Desktop, Power BI Web Service, Power BI for Mobile, Power BI Publisher For Excel, Power BI Gateway, and Power BI Report Server. ************************************************************************* What's is in the workbook?
