Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 8.0/10, Nirma University (Institute of Technology), course: Computer Aided Structure Analysis and Design, language: English, abstract: Advancement in high strength materials, and construction technologies along with the development of analysis, and design software and value engineering has facilitated the growth of long-span bridges. Cable supported bridges have span varying from 250 m to 1100 m which vary from cable-stayed, suspension, and extradosed bridges. Extradosed bridges are generally medium span bridges with a span range of 150 to 350m. It was invented in 1970, by Maithivat J. EXTRADOS means top fiber of an arch. In terms of bridge engineering, EXTRADOS means a bridge having external cables in the top fiber of deck along with internal prestressing. Extradosed bridge is an option between the cantilever constructed girder bridge and cable-stayed bridge. Extradosed bridges are more suitable where the height of pylon is restricted due to a nearby airport or deck depth is restricted due to moving vehicles under the bridge. In recent times, there is an increase in the construction of extradosed bridges. Case study of 40 bridges constructed in India and Japan have been carried out to understand the basic behavior and recent trends in extradosed bridges. A number of parameters like cable angle, deck depth, the height of the pylon, cable configuration, and much more appropriate configuration and combination of configuration are considered to achieve economy in construction. In the present work parametric study is carried out by varying stay cable profile, cable angle, location of cable, height of pylon, and construction methods. Two popular concepts for design of extradosed bridges, one being stiff girder and flexible pylon system and another being stiff tower and flexible girder system. In the present study design is carried out by stiff girder and flexible pylon extradosed bridge having span of 100 m +170 m +100 m. Gravity Loads are considered as per IRC - 6. Design of super structure is carried out as per IRC -112, and stay cables are designed as per SETRA-2000 guidelines. Construction stage analysis and design is also carried out for the same bridge. Time taken for each construction stage is archived by construction scheduling of the bridge. Comparative study has been carried out to understand both the stay cable force finding methods which are Forward process analysis (FPA) and backward process analysis (BPA).

The need for large-scale bridges is constantly growing due to the enormous infrastructure development around the world. Since the 1970s many of them have been cable-stayed bridges. In 1975 the largest span length was 404 m, in 1995 it increased to 856 m, and today it is 1104 m. Thus the economically efficient range of cable-stayed bridges is tending to move towards even larger spans, and cable-stayed bridges are increasingly the focus of interest worldwide. This book describes the fundamentals of design analysis, fabrication and construction, in which the author refers to 250 built examples to illustrate all aspects. International or national codes and technical regulations are referred to only as examples, such as bridges that were designed to German DIN, Eurocode, AASHTO, British Standards. The chapters on cables and erection are a major focus of this work as they represent the most important difference from other types of bridges. The examples were chosen from the bridges in which the author was personally involved, or where the consulting engineers, Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners (LAP), participated significantly. Other bridges are included for their special structural characteristics or their record span lengths. The most important design engineers are also presented. Note: The lecture videos which are attached to the print book on DVD are not part of the e-book.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: unknown, University of Weimar, language: English, abstract: The vibration characteristic of a cable stayed bridges structure is the main axis of the study in this paper, many structural parameters are used to simulate and determine the effect of vibration on the structural performance by identifying the natural frequencies of the system and the mode shapes that can occur in the real structure. Modeling the stay cables with three famous styles of arrangements such as Harp, Semi Harp and Fan styles, and assigning roller, hinged and fixed boundary conditions on the deck support of the cable stayed bridge, in addition to using two design cases of the girders and pylons dimensions in the global structure for that purpose. Through the use of ABAQUS finite element analysis, the models were generated for each mentioned cases and the results of the frequency linear perturbation step of 10 mode shapes were determined through the simulation of the deformed shapes and the determined values of the natural frequencies of each mode for each case of interest. It was seen that the roller boundary condition was much prone to the early vibration and the stay cables of the direction near to the roller support were vibrated and stressed much more than the other direction compared with the hinged and fixed boundary conditions, and the mode shapes 7, 8, 9 and 10 were the most vibrated cases for all the boundary conditions without any distinction. The week design of the girders and the pylons has the great effect on the vibration of the stay cables, pylons and deck of the structure especially near the roller support direction due to the early vibration of the case of roller support, so the use of cross ties and damping between the stay cables and the girders are very important in the cases of significant vibrations which affect the performance of the cable stayed bridges.

This book is dedicated to the study of an aeroelastic phenomenon of cable supported long span bridges known as flutter, and proposes very innovative design methodologies, such as sensitivity analysis and optimization techniques, already utilized successfully in automobile and aerospace industries. The topic of long-span suspension and cable-stayed bridges is currently of great importance. These types of bridge pose great technical difficulties due to their slenderness and often great dimension. Therefore, these bridges tend to have problems caused by natural forces such as wind loads, some of which we have witnessed in our history, and we are currently seeing a very high incidence of bridge construction to overcome geographical obstacles such as bays, straits, or great estuaries. Therefore, it seems very appropriate to write a book showing the current capability of analysis and design, when up until now, the information could only be found partially in technical articles. This book will be useful for bridge design engineers as well as researchers working in the field. This book only requires previous knowledge of structural finite element models and dynamics, and it is advisable to have some previous knowledge in bridge engineering. Nevertheless, this book is very self-contained in such a way that all the information necessary to understand the theoretical developments is presented without the need of additional bibliography.

The present book provides a comprehensive survey on the governing phenomena of cable vibration, both associated with direct action of wind and rain: buffeting, vortex-shedding, wake effects, rain-wind vibration; and resulting from the indirect excitation through anchorage oscillation: external and parametric excitation. Methodologies for assessment of the effects of those phenomena are presented and illustrated by practical examples. Control of cable vibrations is then discussed and state-of-art results on the design of passive control devices are presented.

This volume deals with the most modern and topical problems of bridge design. The topics presented allow to tackle both theoretical-analytical as well as technical-constructive aspects of the design problem, pointing out how in the case of bridges, specifically for long span bridges, the two aspects are absolutely inseparable. In modern bridges, reasons of technical and economic feasibility oblige an extreme parceling of the construction process, with the consequent need to revise, with respect to the past, both design concepts as well as the theoretical apparatus of analysis that governs it. All this can clearly be derived from reading the present volume, in which the different contributions stress theoretical and technical questions of particular interest and topicality, without claiming to approach them systematically, but offering clear procedural rules and trend indications. With reference to the theoretical approach, some of particular importance are reviewed, such as the possibility of using limit analysis, the simplification of the design process for bridges, durability, and computer aided design. For what concerns the bridge typologies and the corresponding constructive problems, the emphasis is mostly on the ones still in an evolutionary phase, that is long span suspended/stayed bridges and cantilever built bridges with prefabricated segments.
