The novel was the basis of a 1949 musical film starring Gloria Jean as Polly.Polly Milton, a 14-year-old country girl, visits her cousin Fanny Shaw and her wealthy family in the city for the first time. Poor Polly is overwhelmed by the splendor at the Shaws' and their urbanized, fashionable lifestyles, expensive clothes and other habits she has never been exposed to, and, for the most part, dislikes. Fanny's friends reject her because of her different behavior and simple clothing, and Fan herself can't help considering her unusual sometimes. However, Polly's warmth, support and kindness eventually win the hearts of all the family members, and her old-fashioned ways teach them a lesson.Six years later, Polly comes back to the city to become a music teacher and struggles with profession issues and internal emotions. Later in the book, Polly finds out that the prosperous Shaws are on the brink of bankruptcy, and she guides them to the realization that a wholesome family life is the only thing they will ever need, not money or decoration.

AS a preface is the only place where an author can with propriety explain a purpose or apologize for shortcomings, I venture to avail myself of the privilege to make a statement for the benefit of my readers. As the first part of "An Old-Fashioned Girl" was written in 1869, the demand for a sequel, in beseeching little letters that made refusal impossible, rendered it necessary to carry my heroine boldly forward some six or seven years into the future. The domestic nature of the story makes this audacious proceeding possible; while the lively fancies of my young readers will supply all deficiencies, and overlook all discrepancies. This explanation will, I trust, relieve those well-regulated minds, who cannot conceive of such literary lawlessness, from the bewilderment which they suffered when the same experiment was tried in a former book. The "Old-Fashioned Girl" is not intended as a perfect model, but as a possible improvement upon [Page] the Girl of the Period, who seems sorrowfully ignorant or ashamed of the good old fashions which make woman truly beautiful and honored, and, through her, render home what it should be, -a happy place, where parents and children, brothers and sisters, learn to love and know and help one another. If the history of Polly's girlish experiences suggests a hint or insinuates a lesson, I shall feel that, in spite of many obstacles, I have not entirely neglected my duty toward the little men and women, for whom it is an honor and a pleasure to write, since in them I have always found my kindest patrons, gentlest critics, warmest friends.L. An Old-Fashioned Girl is kind of like no pulp orange juice; it's a feel-good read that flows nicely and brings back memories of sunny days. Reminiscent of the old tale of the town mouse and the country mouse, this coming-of-age classic features an endearing, "old-fashioned" protagonist; entertaining adventures; lessons about life, family, and friendship; and peanuts (satisfying my peanut butter craving). In a time of European immigration and industrialization in the United States, fourteen-year-old country girl Polly Milton makes her first trip into the city of Boston to visit her cousin Fanny Shaw and her family. She finds life in the city to be extremely different from life in the countryside, and has a hard time adjusting to the habits and lifestyles of her fashionable cousin. But old-fashioned Polly, with her sense of practicality and childlike happiness, slowly melts the Shaw family's hearts and helps them remember the joys of family and friendship during her stay. Six years later, Polly moves into the city to make a living as a music teacher, and faces new challenges in her job and her personal life as she continues to struggle with being the old-fashioned girl.

In 1881 Carl and Gunilla Swensson traveled from Malmo, Sweden to America in search of a better life for themselves and their three children. Hilda, the youngest daughter, was three years old at the time. The Swenssons, whose name was changed to Swanson at Ellis Island, settled in Northeast Minneapolis where they opened a boarding house on Harrison Street. Hilda the Biography of an Old-Fashioned Girl in an Old-Fashioned World, is a tribute to Hilda Johnson's life written by her daughter, Semona Whitney. The story reads like a novel. Historical and suitable for adults and children alike, it is a vivid portrait of life's chances, losses, and triumphs in another era. Disabled in early childhood by rickets, Hilda cannot run and play outside with the other children. But when a music teacher gives "stahkars litten Hilda" ("poor little Hilda") piano lessons in exchange for a room at the Swanson boarding house, Hilda's adventures begin. Her music takes her as a young adult across the frozen Midwest with Alexander Bull, son of the famous Norwegian violinist, Ole Bull, and back to the drawing rooms of the Minneapolis elite. Hilda struggles between her love for music and her longing for family, between independence and duty, finding at last her true love. A remarkable woman, Hilda viewed life with humor and lived it with passion. This book is her story.
