What main factors affect mammalian home range size and dynamics? To what extent do constraints on home range characteristics vary between the sexes? This book aims to address these issues by concentrating the authors' expertise and experience in studies of home ranges in general and focusing on their studies of black bears of the Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, in particular. The authors provide an overview of the black bears and methods for their study before discussing concepts of home range, developing predictive habitat quality models, addressing influences of food production on social organization and exploring the mating behaviour of male bears.

Three species of bear inhabit North America: the grizzly, the polar bear, and the black bear. But the American black bear is truly North America's bear, found only in North America. Black bears range from Canada to Mexico, from New England to California. There may be as many as 750,000 black bears roaming the forests and mountains of the continent. With its large population, and with more people moving into black bear territory, it's important that we understand this magnificent animal. Stephen R. Swinburne takes us to where black bears live. He joins biologists in search of bears in the Pennsylvania woods, where a mother bear is examined and her cubs tagged. He visits a "school teacher" for orphaned cubs who teaches them how to survive in the wild. Along the way, he offers his personal observations together with fascinating facts about black bears and their world. (Did you know that in the autumn, black bears consume as much as twenty thousand calories a day? That's equivalent to forty-two hamburgers!) With stunning full-color and archival photographs, this lively book shows how North America's bear behaves and survives.

Black bears are such large animals with such large appetites! They literally can eat 100 pounds of food in a single day. Blacks bears are the Titans of the Forests, but by nature they prefer a quiet life and seek to avoid confrontation. In this book, the reader will come to know the Black Bear, its ferocious passion for food, why these bears do not truly hibernate, what does trigger the long winter sleep many experience, and what to do should you encounter a black bear in the woods.

When black bears cross roads, their HRs increase, indicating heightened alertness to danger. Wildlife reacts to roads in various ways, but it is unknown whether road crossings are stressful. We monitored black bears with cardiac monitors and GPS-collars in Minnesota. On average, bears crossed a road once a day; their HRs increased when 100 m away, and increased more with higher traffic volume, but not enough to suggest roadway interactions were highly stressful.

Concerns over human-bear conflict and questions about the ecology of Paunsaugunt Plateau's population of black bears (Ursus americanus) arose due to their visitation to popular recreation sites. Greater insight about bears and their habitat use provides a foundation for conflict mitigation and effective management decisions. Between 2014 and 2017, seventeen black bears (11 female, 6 male) were fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio-collars so that we could track their locations, daily activity patterns, and ambient temperatures. By analyzing bear locations, we calculated annual and seasonal home ranges for 16 bears, including 25 den sites. Home ranges typically consisted of three dominant vegetation types, Utah juniper, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. I used mixed effects models to better understand den site selection and found that slope (27.87 ± 2.03) was the most significant factor (p

Volume 3 Audubon and Bachman's Quadrupeds of North America begins with this description of the jaguar: "The Jaguar compares with the Asiatic tiger in size and in shape; its legs, however, are shorter than those of the royal tiger, although its body is perhaps as heavy. Head, large; jaws, capable of great expansion; incisors, large, and slightly curved inwards; ears, rather small, rounded, clothed with short hairs on the inside. €Body, rather inclining to be stout, and shorter and less elegant than the cougar: at the shoulders the Jaguar is not much more raised from the earth, but it stands higher from the ground near the rump ..."
