Looking Queer: Body Image in Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, and Transgender Communities contains research, firsthand accounts, poetry, theory, and journalistic essays that address and outline the special needs of sexual minorities when dealing with eating disorders and appearance obsession. Looking Queer will give members of these communities hope, insight, and information into body image issues, helping you to accept and to love your body. In addition, scholars, health care professionals, and body image activists will not only learn about queer experiences and identity and how they affect individuals, but will also understand how some of the issues involved affect society as a whole. Dismantling the myth that body image issues affect only heterosexual women, Looking Queer explores body issues based on gender, race, class, age, and disability. Furthermore, this groundbreaking book attests to the struggles, pain, and triumph of queer people in an open and comprehensive manner. More than 60 contributors provide their knowledge and personal experiences in dealing with body image issues exclusive to the gay and transgender communities, including: exploring and breaking down the categories of gender and sexuality that are found in many body image issues finding ways to heal yourself and your community discovering what it means to “look like a dyke” or to “look gay” fearing fat as a sign of femininity determining what race has to do with the gay ideal discussing the stereotyped ”double negative”--being a fat lesbian learning strategies of resistance to societal ideals critiquing ”the culture of desire” within gay men’s communities that emphasizes looks above everything else Revealing new and complex dimensions to body image issues, Looking Queer not only discusses the struggles and hardships of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons, but looks at the processes that can lead to acceptance of oneself. Written by both men and women, the topics and research in Looking Queer offer insight into the lives of people you can relate to, enabling you to learn from their experiences so you, too, can find joy and happiness in accepting your body. Am I Pretty Enough Yet? is a self-help book aimed at 13- to 18-year-old girls, designed to empower them as they navigate their teenage years and grow into young women. Inspired by the many girls she has worked with – and the numerous insecurities, fears and pressures they experience – Julia Armstrong has created a book which is pitched directly at teenagers. Candid and informal, it ranges across topics such as beauty, weight, celebrity culture, sex, social media and body hair. It will answer many of the questions teenage girls have and support them in dealing with the challenges of contemporary society. “Boys have many difficulties too but this book is for the girls, and the world they have to negotiate today is far harder than my own was and is some cause for concern. What is expected of them, of you, from all angles is for many unobtainable and for all unreasonable. It seems to me, that in many ways, girls have it harder than ever before.” Self-esteem is the most powerful tool a woman can have, but few young women are born with it. Many women, especially young girls, can feel that they are not good enough, not pretty enough or not slim enough. The goal of this book is to help remedy this, empowering young girls to look after and fortify their emotional well-being. Challenging modern stereotypes, it provides teenage girls with a guide on how to deal with the negative pressure from the media and peer groups and the pressure teenagers often put on themselves. Written by a teacher with over 20 years' experience dealing with the issues it covers, Am I Pretty Enough Yet? offers self-help tools and techniques to build up self-esteem in young women.

ISBN : 9781101657560
Genre : Fiction
File Size : 55.67 MB
Format : PDF, Kindle

Read : 185

In this classic novel, James Fenimore Cooper portrays life in a new settlement on New York's Lake Otsego in the closing years of the eighteenth century. He describes the year's cycle: the turkey shoot at Christmas, the tapping of maple trees, fishing for bass in the evening, the marshalling of the militia. But Cooper is also concerned with exploring the development of the cultural and philosophical underpinnings of the American experience. He writes of the conflicts within the settlement itself, focusing primarily on the contrast between the natural codes of the hunter and woodsman Natty Bumppo and his Indian friend John Mohegan and the more rigid structure of law needed by a more complex society. Quite possibly America's first best-seller (more than three thousand copies were sold within hours of publication), The Pioneers today evokes a vibrant and authentic picture of the American pioneering experience. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Not For Everyday Use

Author : Elizabeth Nunez
ISBN : 9781617752780
Genre : Biography & Autobiography
File Size : 87.49 MB
Format : PDF, Docs
Download : 246
Read : 967

The author explores her mother’s marriage—and fourteen pregnancies—in this “powerful memoir” (Ebony). One of Oprah.com’s Best Memoirs of the Year Winner of the 2015 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Nonfiction Tracing the four days between the moment she gets the dreaded call and the burial of her mother, Elizabeth Nunez tells of her lifelong struggle to cope with her parents’ ambitions for their children—and her mother’s seemingly unbreakable conviction that displays of affection are not for everyday use. Yet Nunez sympathizes with her parents, whose happiness is constrained by the oppressive strictures of colonialism; by the Catholic Church’s prohibition of artificial birth control which her mother obeys, terrified by the threat of eternal damnation (her mother gets pregnant fourteen times: nine live births and five miscarriages which almost kill her); and by the complexities of skin color in Caribbean society. Through it all, a fierce love holds this family together, and helps carry Nunez through her grief, in this “intriguing [and] courageous memoir” (Kirkus Reviews). “Nunez ponders the cultural, racial, familial, social, and personal experiences that led to what she ultimately understands was a deeply loving union between her parents. A beautifully written exploration of the complexities of marriage and family life.” —Booklist
