Tourism over the past three decades has grown phenomenally but is continually modified by ongoing events and forces--such as increasing or abating pollution and congestion issues, new forms of transportation, and altered economic, social, or political conditions. The contributions in this work are of great importance to the advancement of knowledge of tourism, and, as a first theoretical book in the area, it establishes a significant benchmark for subsequent tourism research. The volume includes contributions by tourism specialists from Australia, France, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States: Richard Butler, Professor of Geography, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada; Graham Dann, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, University of West Indies, Bridgetown, Barbados; Emanuel de Kadt, Director, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, Brighton, Sussex, United Kingdom; Bryan Farrell, Professor of Geography, University of California, Santa Cruz; Nelson H. Graburn, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley; Martinus J. Kosters, Director of the Netherlands Institute for Tourism and Transport, Breda; Marie-Françoise Lanfant, Director of Research, Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris; Dennison Nash, Professor of Anthropology, University of Connecticut; Douglas G. Pearce, Professor of Geography, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand; John Pigram, Associate Professor of Geography and Planning and Executive Director, Center for Water Policy Research, University of New England, Armidale NSW, Australia; and Geoffrey Wall, Professor of Geography, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Tourism Alternatives is a provocative and important book that will be of interest to tourism planners at all levels of government and private enterprise, and to scholars and students in the fields of tourism and resort development.

The controversial nat. debate over strategic defense has been overshadowed by other nat. & global issues. Research programs for the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) continue, however, & the debate is likely to resume as visible results of that research begin to compete for a share of the nation¿s budget. This study considers strategic defense in the context of 4 competing strategic theories: deterrence through mutual assured destruction; deterrence through nuclear warfighting; deterrence relying on non-nuclear defense; & disarmament. Non-nuclear, space-based defense is not only feasible, but in some ways preferable to reliance on weapons of mass destruction. To support his case, he outlines a proposed actual system. Illus.

Prepared by the Task Committee on Overtopping Protection of the Hydraulics Division of ASCE. This report summarizes the results of an inventory and evaluation of innovative spillway designs and overtopping protection systems developed to provide cost-effective safety modifications for existing dams. The information in this report, which covers pertinent projects in all stages from initial design through construction and operation, was derived from a literature search and a direct survey of the engineering community involved in dam safety modifications. The report contains a brief review of procedures to be used for assessment of the consequences of dam failure and the associated risks is presented for development of the design flood. This is followed by a discussion of innovative spillway designs and the state of the art in dam overtopping protection alternatives. ForØspillway design, this report especially focuses on the use of labyrinth spillways and fuseplug embankments. For overtopping protection systems, the report assesses roller-compacted concrete and precast concrete blocks for smaller dams and cast-in-place reinforced concrete slabs for larger dams. Nonstructural alternatives such as revised reservoir operating requirements and downstream early warning systems are also addressed.

In 1983, the International Conference on Afghan Alternatives brought together a small but diverse group of scholars and officials to discuss at length and in depth the issues raised by the tragic conflict that continues between the overwhelming majority of the Afghan people and the Soviet invaders since December 1979. In "Afghan Alternatives, "the participants have expanded and updated their conference remarks to illuminate the issues, present policy options, and offer wide-ranging and provocative solutions to the Afghan conflict, which they all view as a dangerous and illegitimate use of force by the Soviet Union. "Afghan Alternatives "answers these questions: Why did the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan? What options do they have now? What are the long-term strategic dangers for the region should the Soviets be allowed to absorb Afghanistan? What is the effect of Islamic ideology on the conflict? What are the security and political aspects of Afghan refugees in Pakistan? What are the broader aspects of the relationship of the Afghan resistance to the international order? What international developments could help resolve the conflict? What is the role of the international community in providing aid to Afghanistan? How does this conflict affect Pakistani-Afghan relations? "Contents and Contributors: "Ralph Magnus, "Introduction"; Jiri Valenta, "Soviet Aims, Policies, and Alternatives in Afghanistan"; Eden Naby, "The Afghan Resistance Movement"; Marvin G. Weinbaum, "The International Community and Afghanistan"; Responses and Options"; Harmon E. Kirby, "U.S. Policy on Afghanistan"; Thomas E. Gouttierre, "The Role of Perceptions Concerning American Interests in the Afghan Resistance"; Noor A. Husain, "Alternative Future for Afghanistan"; and commentaries by Marian K. Leighton, Gregory M. Global Report On Validated Alternatives To The Use Of Methyl Bromide For Soil Fumigation

Author : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
ISBN : 9251046336
Genre : Bromomethane
File Size : 81.29 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Mobi

Methyl bromide (MeBr), used as a fumigant to control several soil-borne pests in various crops, is a strong ozone depleter, and governments and international agencies aware of the problem have agreed to establish a programme to phase out its use. As a result, some literature on new MeBr alternatives is available that describes the feasibility and disadvantages of each new pest control measure. Some of these publications result from workshops and symposia organized in different countries by the United Nations Environment Programme and by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The present report provides information on successful alternatives in some countries or regions where MeBr is being phased out. Although the report often shows the lack of already validated alternatives, particularly for a region such as Africa, the material provides enough elements on the technical and economic success of a variety of alternatives to assist agricultural researchers and extensionists in carrying out further studies and/or for validation. The material can also serve as a reference, particularly for the training of trainers.
