Valuing portfolios of options embedded in investment decisions is arguably one of the most important and challenging problems in real options and corporate ?nance in general. Although the problem is common and vitally important in the value creation process of almost any corporation, it has not yet been satisfactorily addressed. It is key for any corporation facing strategic resource allocation decisions, be it a pharmaceutical ?rm valuing and managing its pipeline of drugs, a telecom company having to select a set of technological alternatives, a venture capital or private equity ?rm investing in a portfolio of ventures, or any company allocating resources. Portfolios of real options typically interact such that the value of the whole differs from the sum of the separate parts. Thus one must address and value the particular con?guration of options embedded in a speci?c situation, taking into account the con?guration of other options already present in the portfolio, which in turn depends on the correlation struc ture among the various underlying assets and the strategic dependencies among the options themselves (e. g. , mutual exclusivity, strategic additiv ity, compoundness, complementarity etc. ). In that sense, optimal decisions also depend on past option exercise decisions by management and organi zational capabilities put in place in the past.

Banking is at the forefront of the effort to quantify and measure operational risk and as such can be role model beyond the financial services industry. The Basel Committee of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has created a new capital accord, known as Basel II. Basel II requires banks to establish an operational risk management (ORM) framework and compute an explicit capital charge for operational risk once it is adopted. This chapter from Goverance, Risk, and Compliance Handbook, by Anthony Tarantino, outlines different approaches, tools, and guidance on operational risk management for financial services companies.

The current transformation of the global economy is being driven by new fundamental innovations, digitalization, industry dynamics and climate change. The impact of this transformation in terms of value migration, industry boundaries, investment and firm continuity is vast. The fourth edition of Strategy, Value and Risk examines these issues, and how they will influence firms and industries in the future. Those aspects of the business environment that will have a significant impact on strategy, business models, investments and value are identified, and the accounting, finance, economic and quantitative principles that provide a foundation for the analysis of these issues are discussed. Part I: Strategy, Value and Risk provides the strategic, economic, accounting and financial framework. Strategy discusses technology and innovation, industry dynamics, globalization and industry concentration, climate change, industry boundaries and future value. Value discusses the accounting framework and corporate finance and investment, while Risk covers investment risk, corporate risk management and value and risk. Part II: Quantitative Analytics provides an overview of financial statistics, derivatives and derivative applications, and provides a background on the financial economics used in the analysis of physical, intangible, financial and energy assets. Part III: The Analysis of Investments, Transformation and Value examines platforms, data and analytics, the energy sector, pharmaceutical and biotech, a growth firm and media transformation, and applies the accounting, economic, financial and quantitative concepts. This fourth edition lays out scenarios that will likely shape firms and industries in the future, and has relevance to CFOs, corporate finance and investment professionals. Business model disruption, data and analytics, intangible assets and dynamic analysis are now key issues within the CFO role. Investment professionals are required to see the larger economic environment in which firms compete, assess a firm’s industry and its position within that industry, recognize which investments best serve its broad strategic goals and identify a firm’s capabilities and options. A background in the accounting, finance, economic, quantitative and valuation concepts that are relevant to the digital economy, new industries, business models and technologies is essential for finance professionals. This book addresses these issues within the context of the fundamental changes underway in the global economy, and provides applications of the techniques to illustrate the concepts.

As real estate investment trusts continue to grow exponentially in Asia and Europe - being already well established in the USA and Australasia - a comprehensive guide to the issues involved in REIT property investment decision making is badly needed. This book draws together the most recent developments in REIT management from academic research and professional practice. It is based on current, original academic research, including structured interviews with the managers of a wide range of different types of REITs as well as the research and publications of others, together with the author's 25 years experience in REIT management. It provides a theoretically robust and practically relevant up to date guide to the property investment decision making process for REITs. Presenting new insights, the author breaks the REIT property investment decision making process down into three phases comprising six stages with 30 sequential steps. Each chapter focuses on one stage of the property investment decision making process and introduces the key people in the REIT management team relevant to the activities in that chapter. The theory and principles are considered and illustrated by application to Super REIT, a $15bn diversified REIT. Global Real Estate Investment Trusts: People, Process and Management fuses not only how REITs should undertake property investment decision making - based on how it is undertaken and the underlying property theory, capital market theory and finance theory - but also why each part of the decision making process is important. This book provides the first sole-authored scholarly work specifically on REITs as a business enterprise and REIT property investment decision making as an holistic and cyclical process. The focus is on principles, making it relevant in each of the four major REIT markets around the world: USA, Europe, Asia and Australasia. An essential book for REIT managers and all those practising professionals involved in the REIT industry - including property practitioners, researchers, lawyers, accountants, bankers and directors around the world.
