Sara comes from an impoverished Irish family and from an early age, seeks independence. She realises this will only be achiveved if she leaves her family, her village and possibly her country. Her first step to 'personal' freedom results in a traumatic incident which affects her deeply and causes her to question long held tenets in her life. A love affair leads her into a disastrous 'marriage of convenience' and poverty ; a promise to keep a secret eventually results in her being ostracised by her family. Throughout her restless and often dramatic life, she survives poverty, WWII and travels across the water many times, taking her to three continents, before she embarks on an 'impossible' quest.

Madman Across The Water introduces the world to the nation of Atlanteas. Revered for its navy and merchants trading to all corners of the world, Plato's Kingdom of Atlantis disappeared below the waves in a day and a night, taken by the Gods. Yet, could such a civilization so quickly die? The world of 1801 lives without knowing the survivors of Atlantis restored their nation, evolving as a hidden civilization. Off the Atlantic Coasts of the Americas, the City-States of the Nation of Atlanteas, 7 Major Domes, and 14 Minor Domes were carved into the bedrock of the seafloor over millennia. Seventy-five million people live lives using wonders not yet possible in the opening of the 21st Century. As the Industrial Age builds, slavery of the Colonial Age is becoming unsustainable worldwide - and a parallel revolution begins in the world's most advanced civilization. Atlantean scientists Addon Greis and Shan'na Anavan are opening a new chapter for humanity; finding a path to the stars is within the grasp of their generation. They need one final tool to create this new reality, one made possible when Nassiti Passur, rogue Rödd Priestess, comes into their lives. They prepare to give birth to a forbidden form of life; photonic beings, artificial intelligence evolving to understand human feelings and emotions, connecting directly to the mind of their human companions. From childhood, Science Council Elder Pieter Loéke believed AI killed Pacifica Dome. Proclaimed the Master Assassin in the Shadow Guard secret police in his early career, he ascends to power, wealth, and control of disruptive technology. But he is a man who lost nearly all he ever valued. Now the Rödd Cleric families, his long-time adversaries, threaten revolutionary disruption, granting AI rights as living beings, free of control by the Conglomerates or Science Council. Loéke's fiercely loyal protégé Vyalkeus Kyy becomes drawn into his fight. Pieter spent decades grooming the once broken, victimized girl to become the next feared Master Assassin. Yet, he holds a dark secret over Vyalkeus - one shared with young Vicereine Fastell with Lan'na Anavan, Shan'na's twin, on the asteroid miner Nile Delta. Lisul Pacella, the career guardian of the Atlantean National Archives, has found dark secrets of the Shadow Guard and Science Council. Threatened by Loéke's Cabal, can she survive to bring their crimes to justice?. How far will Pieter go to stop Lisul, Addon, Shan'na, and Nassiti? Will he risk the heart of his civilization, those on the Nile Delta, and the life of the woman he loves, to exact vengeance for a tragedy which already cost him his family? After peace for a thousand years, will this become the civil war foretold by the Rodd Priestesses?Madman Across the Water - Histories Of The Exodus: Volume 1 - 560 Pages Paperback

World attention is increasingly turning towards the region of the Indian Ocean as the coming strategic arena of the 21st century. India and China, the new economic superpowers, exert palpable global influence while also seeking control of shipping lanes and oil supplies, as well as a dominance in African markets and minerals. Al-Qaida continues to operate around the Indian Ocean littoral in Tanzania, Kenya, Comoros, Indonesia, and Yemen. The audacious Somali pirates astound international media audiences. As an arena in which these developments intersect, the Indian Ocean offers a privileged vantage point from which to track a changing world order. This collection of essays captures the complexities of these emerging Indian Ocean realities. What are the links, circuits, and exchanges that both unite and divide different regions? How does one factor Africa into this Ocean world? The essays offer rich interdisciplinary perspectives and examine the interactions between Africa and India.

I often feel like that; but there's nobody to tell, except the trees and the dogs, and my poorpony, who is almost too old and second-childish now to understand. She was my brotherStanforth's pony first of all, and Stanforth is twenty-eight; then she was Vic's, and Vic is-but Mother doesn't like Vic's age to be mentioned any more, though she is years youngerthan Stan.I took a walk in the park and afterwards went through the rose-garden, to see how theroses were getting on. There were a lot of petals for my pot-pourri, and gathering them upkept me for some time. Then, as the jar stands in Vic's and my den (she calls it her den, butit has to be part mine, as I have no other), I was going in by one of the long windows, when Iheard Mother's voice. "The question is," she was saying, "what's to be done with Betty?"I turned round and ran away on my tiptoes across the lawn, for I didn't want to be aneavesdropper, and it would be nearly as bad to have Mother know I had heard even thosefew words; she would be so annoyed, and Mother chills me all the way through to my boneswhen she's annoyed. It is wonderful how she does it, for she never scolds; but thethermometer simply drops to freezing-point, and you feel like a poor little shivering crocusthat has come up too soon, by mistake, to find the world covered with snow, and no hope ofsqueezing back into its own cosy warm bulb again.

Excerpt ese people's friendship for you, so that you need not feel it incumbent to be oppressively grateful, you know. I should wish you to keep your dignity among foreigners, even though you would, of course, look upon Mrs. Stuyvesant-Knox as, in a way, your guardian. Now I must call Thompson, and have her put me into my dinner dress, as there is no more time to waste. When Mrs. Stuyvesant-Knox speaks of your visit, you will know what to say." I mumbled something vaguely dutiful, and began to dress as quickly as I could; but the more I thought of it, the more I felt that I hadn't been fairly treated, to be disposed of in such an offhand way. After all, I am eighteen; and a person of eighteen isn't a child.
