Protoplanetary disks around young stars are the sites of planetary formation. Recent high spatial resolution observations from both ground and space have revealed wide varieties of disk morphology and composition. This diversity of disk properties is certainly the seeds for the well known diversity of about 350 exoplanets so far detected. Encouraged with the recent success of direct imaging of exoplanets, next generation high-contrast instruments on the 8-m class telescopes are starting to fully explore direct observations of both exoplanets and disks. This international conference was held to give an overview of this rapidly developing field and promote discussion on future studies among observers, theorists, and instruments.

A few years ago, a motivation for organizing one more IAU Symposium on star for mation in Grenoble, was the anticipated completion of the IRAM interferometer on the Plateau de Bures, close to Grenoble. This choice was also a sort of late celebration of the genius of Joseph Fourier, born in Grenoble, whose work is the very fondation of in terferometry. At the time when we finally announced the advent of this conference, the first reactions we got from the community were expressions of saturation and even reject, the Symposium being unfortunately scheduled almost simultaneously as two other major meetings on closely related topics, and sponsored by different organizations. A wave of disappointment then reached the organizers. Some of us were enthusiastic enough to help the others overcome their discouragement. Let them be thanked here. There was, indeed, a deeper motivation for organizing this conference. It was to trigger the meeting and communication of physicists and astrophysicists since many of the difficulties met now in understanding the physics of the interstellar medium and its evolution toward star formation are common to several, if not most, other fields of physics. They are assigned to one origin: complexity.
"On 12 February 2006, the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi erupted for the first time since 1985, its 6th (at least!) known eruption. This event triggered an intensive multi-wavelength observational campaign, from the radio to gamma-rays, and theoreticians have been presented with a wealth of high-quality data. A workshop was held at Keele University, UK, from 12-14 June 2007 to discuss the observations, their interpretation, and where RS Ophiuchi sits in the wider astrophysical picture. The workshop brought together observers, from gamma-ray to radio wavelengths, theoreticians, and workers in closely related areas. The workshop considered not only the 2006 eruption of RS Oph but also the implications that this has had for our understanding of other much broader areas of astrophysics. It was wide ranging, taking in the environments of red giants; supernova progenitors; accretion, thermonuclear processes and evolution of close binary systems; and shocks of jets, as well as recurrent novae and related objects. The proceedings contain 15 invited reviews, 38 contributed talks and posters, and 3 specially commissioned papers which we hope will enhance the value of the workshop for the wider astrophysical community."--Publisher's website.
