Abstract: The teaching of hip hop dance in a formal university setting is a hotly debated topic. Pioneers of hip hop dance, as well as people from various academic perspectives, raise questions about the appropriation of a social dance form from a marginalized community into an atmosphere of general privilege, and many academics echo this by worrying that the form is fundamentally changed and not given its due by placement in a formal context, often being taught by people who are not well-versed in its history or street practice. On the other side of this debate is a student population clamoring for instruction in this dance form. While other dance forms seem to have rather predictable, manageable levels of attendance, at both universities at which I have taught and taken class, hip hop dance classes cannot be offered in sufficient numbers for lack of qualified instructors. This fact has been echoed in conversations I have had with people at many other institutions. Is there an "appropriate" or "sensitive" way of teaching this subject? More importantly, does hip hop's popularity as both a music and dance form have more to do with pop culture images and marketing than real interest in the features of the form? In the end, the concerns of both hip hop "purists" and sensitive academics deal primarily with the process of cultural transmission. Jane Desmond argues in "Embodying Difference" that dance is "an important mode of distinction between social groups" and accordingly signals group affiliation. While hip hop culture is not and has never been the domain of only African-Americans, all aspects of hip hop are fundamentally Africanist, and the development of hip hop culture has taken place largely in predominantly minority, socially and economically marginalized communities. Like many issues, the transmission of hip hop culture gets complicated when issues of race and class become intertwined. As a hip hop dance teacher in a major university dance department, I am constantly creating, reacting to, and observing this process of cultural transmission. I aim to apply the analysis articulated in "Embodying Difference" to my specific situation as a hip hop dance teacher. Desmond acknowledges that power dynamics involving class and race can play strongly in any cultural transmission, but they are inadequate to describe the complexity of such interactions. In light of the undeniable "mainstreaming" of hip hop culture and the visibility of minority culture in major media, I believe it is necessary to take a very close look at what is going on in this situation. By examining the students' expectations for my class and their reactions to gaining historical and cultural context for hip hop dance, critical information will be revealed that is vital to the ongoing debate about hip hop's presence in the academy.

Contemporary Hip-Hop scholarship has demonstrated that hip-hop culture is a racially diverse, youth-driven culture, intimately connected to prior and on-going social justice movements (Chang, 2004; Kitwana, 2002). This study explores the theoretical and practical impact of Hip-hop culture on the identity and pedagogy of students and educators belonging to the Hip-Hop generation. This qualitative study also examines how Hip-hop culture impacts participant (student and educator) identity, politics, and personal pedagogy, while seeking to create a new approach to Hip-Hop Pedagogy. This study was produced through long-term classroom observations and multiple in-depth interviews with students, and self-described Hip-Hop Educators from diverse backgrounds and geographic locations. There are currently limited theoretical and conceptual frameworks in the literature supporting the use of Hip-hop culture as a sustainable model for critical consciousness creation, and democratic community formation, yet hip-hop as an academic intervention is currently being used in K-12 educational contexts throughout the United States and abroad (Akom, 2009; Duncan-Andrade & Morrell, 2008). The results of this study explore the foundational basis, consisting of three primary core Hip-Hop Centered Education "pillars": Community, Democracy, and Social-Consciousness, and consider practical steps necessary to negotiate and implement a sustainable model for Hip-Hop Centered Education (HHCE) in the classroom.
