Compiled by more than 90 experts, this two-volume dictionary includes representatives from all major peninsular literatures: Catalan, Galician, Portuguese and Spanish. The rich history of the literary achievements in the Iberian Peninula--from historial to dramatic--can now be enjoyed by both European and American researchers. Spanning centuries, all literary titles have been followed in the text with a published translation or a literal rendering of the original. Virtually all entries have been composed by noted scholars and are complemented wherever possible by bibliographies of primary texts and selected critical studies as well as existing English translations of primary texts.

The enormous body of short story anthologies from the 19 countries of Spanish America and Brazil testifies to their importance for writers, editors, readers, and, especially, for schools and universities, teachers and students. This volume for the first time gathers this mass of material and organizes it for systematic study. The main section comprises annotated listings of 1302 short story anthologies from Latin America in general, from regions, and from each nation. For most entries a full listing of contents is provided along with brief commentary. A second section, organized in parallel fashion, consists of annotated bibliography of criticism of the short story. Indexes provide access to authors of stories, critics, titles of the critical works, and themes.

The Convent Of Christ Tomar

Author : Paulo Pereira

The Convent of Christ developed as an extension of the Templar's Castle whose construction began in 1160, giving strategic support to the Christian advance to the South as well as being the headquarters of the Templars in Portugal. This fortress led to the re-population of the surrounding region and the appearance of the medieval town of Tomar. The Templar Order was dissolved in 1312 but their property and, in part, their vocation were transferred, in Portugal, to the Order of the Christ, created in 1319. It is thanks to the Order of Christ that the Portuguese nation opened itself to the maritime discoveries carried out in the fifteenth century. After the dissolution of the religious orders, in 1834, the Convent of Christ was used in a variety of ways, from being the residence of the Count of Tomar to the Seminary for Overseas Missions, later being classified as a National Monument of the Portuguese State in 1907 and later as World Heritage by UNESCO. The Convent's architecture provides evidence of the passing ages and the different artistic tendencies. The Convent of Christ displays, in its architectural ensemble, art testimonies of the Romanesque, Templar, Gothic and Manueline style. This stunning book tells the architectural and historical story of this fascinating building. 130 colour illustrations
