No one personified the hopes and dreams of post-war America more than Doris Day. She was ranked the biggest box-office star for four years (1960 and 1962-1964) and ranked in the top 10 for 10 years (1951-1952 and 1959-1966, became the top-ranking female box-office star of all time, and is currently ranked sixth among the all-time top 10 box-office performers. Having graduated from dance-band singer to Hollywood queen in 1948, Doris quickly became the nation’s big-screen sweetheart. Her movie career also featured two Oscar-winning songs – 'Secret Love' from 1953’s Calamity Jane and 'Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)' from The Man Who Knew Too Much. Yet she impressed British director Alfred Hitchcock by being able to deliver the intensity of performance he wanted without guidance. Indeed, some critics went so far as to claim she was wasted on lighter fare. While America’s favorite blonde had little luck with her men in real life – she married four times – she was more than content to share the music and movie spotlight with co-actors. The late-1950s/early-1960s string of light romantic comedies she made, many with Rock Hudson, confirmed her reputation as an all-American screen queen and brought her an Oscar nomination for 1959’s Pillow Talk. She left Hollywood in 1968 on the death of her third husband Marty Melcher, after which she hosted a TV series, The Doris Day Show, for five years until 1973. She devoted her time to animal rights causes. Yet a strong fan following took Doris back to the charts in the current millennium, proving that class is timeless. This book catalogues her Hollywood career, her tangled love life, and the behind-the-scenes challenges she had to overcome to claim her iconic status.

Female Masculinity

Masculinity without men. In Female Masculinity Judith Halberstam takes aim at the protected status of male masculinity and shows that female masculinity has offered a distinct alternative to it for well over two hundred years. Providing the first full-length study on this subject, Halberstam catalogs the diversity of gender expressions among masculine women from nineteenth-century pre-lesbian practices to contemporary drag king performances. Through detailed textual readings as well as empirical research, Halberstam uncovers a hidden history of female masculinities while arguing for a more nuanced understanding of gender categories that would incorporate rather than pathologize them. She rereads Anne Lister's diaries and Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness as foundational assertions of female masculine identity. She considers the enigma of the stone butch and the politics surrounding butch/femme roles within lesbian communities. She also explores issues of transsexuality among "transgender dykes"--lesbians who pass as men--and female-to-male transsexuals who may find the label of "lesbian" a temporary refuge. Halberstam also tackles such topics as women and boxing, butches in Hollywood and independent cinema, and the phenomenon of male impersonators. Female Masculinity signals a new understanding of masculine behaviors and identities, and a new direction in interdisciplinary queer scholarship. Illustrated with nearly forty photographs, including portraits, film stills, and drag king performance shots, this book provides an extensive record of the wide range of female masculinities. And as Halberstam clearly demonstrates, female masculinity is not some bad imitation of virility, but a lively and dramatic staging of hybrid and minority genders.

"While the subject of this book, movie musicals, is one of the most popular genres of film, it is difficult to describe exactly what constitutes a musical. Most films have soundtracks. And many include a few musical numbers, but how much musical content does a film need before it is officially a musical? Since there are no clear-cut rules, I based this book on a few simple guidelines. First, I excluded all silent films, for obvious reasons. Second, I excluded movies where the musical numbers were not performed by the stars of the film, or movies that are basically comedies or dramas, but include a little music. Third, I excluded concert films or any films that did not have a plot. Finally, since this is a book of images, I tried to always give preference to posters that depict people singing or dancing. It is clear that early movies were dominated by a relatively small group of wonderful performers such as Alice Faye, Betty Grable, and, of course, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers." -- Taken from the Introduction by Bruce Hershenson.

"Clark Gable is a man de-classed. You can't guess in any way where he came from or what he was." Frank Taylor, producer of Gable's last film, The Misfits (1961), said this of the man who, to many people, will forever be Southern gentleman Rhett Butler of Gone with the Wind. This work tells Gable's life story, from his birth in 1901 in Cadiz, Ohio, to his death in 1960 in Hollywood. It chronicles his stage career, and of course gives information on every one of his films. His family background, his development as a person, the many romances including five marriages, and his relationships with friends and co-workers are all explored in detail. The sources used and the bibliography are fully annotated.
