And like you and many others, I've gone nuts trying to get my synopsis to say what it needs to say in an interesting and concise way without making it a yawner. I'm also one of those authors who writes a rough synopsis as a road map after I've written about 3 chapters of a book to keep me on track. This book makes it so easy. All the stories in Malice In Memphis: Bluff City Mysteries are pure fiction, even if the locations in which they take place aren't. Our mystery writers group, Malice in Memphis, is always looking for interesting local landmarks to use as settings for great mysteries. The characters who inhabit these places in our stories are also fictional, as are the things they do, both good and bad. Mystery writers walk into a room for the first time and consider where we could most efficiently kill somebody in an interesting way. We discuss untraceable poisons in restaurants-and terrify the poor people who wait on us. We wonder whether the beam that runs across the ceiling in church would hold up a hanging corpse, and how long a dagger would have to be to puncture a heart. We are essentially peaceful. We can always bump off unpleasant people in our writing. No reason to do it in actuality. So don't blame the blameless landmarks we've used. Remember, it's all fiction...

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For readers of Orphan Train and The Nightingale comes a “thought-provoking [and] complex tale about two families, two generations apart . . . based on a notorious true-life scandal.”* Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty. Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption. Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. *Library Journal Praise for Before We Were Yours “A [story] of a family lost and found . . . a poignant, engrossing tale about sibling love and the toll of secrets.” —People “Sure to be one of the most compelling books you pick up this year. . . . Wingate is a master-storyteller, and you’ll find yourself pulled along as she reveals the wake of terror and heartache that is Georgia Tann’s legacy.” —Parade “One of the year’s best books . . . It is impossible not to get swept up in this near-perfect novel.” —The Huffington Post “Lisa Wingate takes an almost unthinkable chapter in our nation’s history and weaves a tale of enduring power.” —Paula McLain, New York Times bestselling author of Circling the Sun

A super human suddenly appears in present day Memphis, Tennessee, during a horrendous explosion of undetermined origin! Who is he? Where is he from? What is his mission? Why doesn't even he know who he really is, and how he ended up in Memphis? He gets into confrontations with drug dealers and the military, almost starts a nuclear war, falls in love twice, unknowingly becomes involved in an insidious plot and struggle for domination of the entire planet, and must face the second of his kind in an epic battle to the death. This is an extremely well thought out and fascinating book. It takes the concept of a super human to a depth never before explored. The science is realistic and well done, and the sociological and psychological implications of a super human are deeply, deeply probed. You will easily be able to tell that the writer did an enormous amount of research to make this novel "live." The style is very cinematic, and you will have to constantly remind yourself that this story is fiction.

DON'T EVER GET OLD was one of mystery-publishing's biggest critical successes last year, earning starred reviews from every major trade publication, garnering nominations for the Edgar, Thriller, and Anthony awards, and winning the Macavity Award for Best First Novel. The producer of four Harry Potter films and the Sherlock Holmes sequel, Lionel Wigram, is set to produce the film version. In Daniel Friedman's new novel, set in Memphis, Tennessee, and four months after the events of DON'T EVER GET OLD, eighty-eight-year-old Buck Schatz is reluctantly coming to terms with the fact that he can only move around with the aid of a walker, and his dementia seems to be getting worse. So when one of Buck's long-time foes, a bank-robber named Elijah, comes to Buck looking for protection from mysterious pursuers, Buck wavers. In the end, his desire to cement his legacy by closing out a series of long-unsolved robberies overwhelms his usual antipathy toward doing favors for people he dislikes. Buck agrees to broker Elijah's surrender to the authorities, if Elijah will promise to confess to his long-ago crimes. But nothing involving Elijah, or Buck, is ever simple, and Elijah's plans for Buck are more sinister than they first appeared. Written in Buck's signature voice and featuring a mystery that will knock your socks off, DON'T EVER LOOK BACK takes a decades-old feud between two dangerous—and now elderly—men and brings it to a final, explosive conclusion.

Like almost everyone, Eric Warberg went to Hollywood to make it big. For many years, he was successful, until directing a few box office bombs made him virtually unemployable. When an opportunity presents itself for a return to his hometown of Memphis, to direct a small, independent film, it is a return to his roots in more ways than one. Despite the fact that he’s greeted like a star, his homecoming is bittersweet. The novel begins on the onset of filming of what is temporarily called Memphis Movie. From day one, Eric feels stuck and unable to find his creative spark. He is helped along by a large cast of characters, some from his past and some from the filmmaking industry, including his partner, Sandy, who wrote the script for the movie. Their open relationship will be challenged by Eric’s return to his roots. Running parallel to the film’s production is the story of ex-hippie poet Camel Jeremy Eros, who has been hired by Eric to add “Memphis mojo” to the script. Camel, who is in his twilight years, will be both tainted and awakened by his assignment. He is helped along by a teenage runaway who has come to live with him and who may or may not be of the “fairy people.” Memphis Movie reads like a Robert Altman film, with many story strands making up the rich tapestry. The novel’s central question: Will Eric lose or find his soul in Memphis, a town where soul has so many meanings?
