Licensed to preach at the age of twelve and ordained at fifteen, Havner spent a lifetime calling people to repentance. A popular revivalist known for his homespun storytelling and memorable wordplay, Havner boldly proclaimed the Word of God for seventy-three years. The author of more than thirty books, Havner's sermons are favorites among pastors who find his style refreshing, his quotes memorable, and his message convincing. In this collection of ten revival sermons, Havner's hard-hitting words proclaim the biblical message of heaven, hell, sin, repentance, sacrifice, holiness, prayer, and the lordship of Christ--themes that resonate with as much relevance today as when Havner first preached them.
Vance Havner’s Reflections on the Gospels was rescued by Michael Catt from a collection of newspaper columns and compiled for the first time into book form. The result is a wonderful devotional volume that gives a unique insight into God’s Word through the eyes of this great preacher.
"The early Christians did not adjust to the situation; they adjusted the situation!" "This world is not our rest; it is a training ground for Christian character. You cannot sharpen an axe on a pound of butter." "God's Word is absolute or it is obsolete. It is wired up from heaven and when we make proper contact we get a shock. But if we stay in contact we get a charge!" These quotations are just a tiny sampling of what you will find in this book of sermons by Vance Havner, a unique servant of God whose spoken ministry spanned over seventy years and whose written ministry extended to almost forty books. Dr. Havner was fond of saying that the preacher's job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, and you will find plenty of both in these pages. Warren Wiersbe once said, "Vance Havner is imitated but he will never be duplicated." Michael Catt, Pastor of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, concurs: "There was no one like Vance Havner. His preaching style was unique, powerful, and pointed. He was a master at turning a phrase, using humor to set up a point, and then driving the point home like a sharp, two-edged sword. Every Christian should read Vance Havner... If you love A. W. Tozer, you'll love Vance Havner. He was one of God's gifts to the church in the 20th century. His ministry and his preaching needs to be heard in the 21st century." Havner's unique style has impacted thousands of God's people through the years and he is considered by many to be the most quoted preacher in America. Vance Havner used the Word of God like a sword. You pick any one of his books and you could sense the presence and power of the Holy Spirit leaping off those pages. -Billy Graham
According to well-known pastor and writer Michael Catt, this book is "Vance Havner at his best." The messages contained here were preached in special meetings and Bible conferences across the country. Wherever he went, Havner focused on stirring revival fires in the hearts of God's people; and through the pages of his many books, his revivalist message and influence are still felt. "We are living in a land which has been graciously blessed of God," he writes, "but it is now sinking into paganism. The last days and the perilous times have come. Any man who can hold an open Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other and yet cannot tell what time it is needs to hear our Lord's sharp word, 'O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?' (Matt. 16:3). On the other hand, Christians all over the world are praying for revival.... Yet there is no revival. There are localized, sporadic stirrings in the body of Christ, as there have always been. But although God's alarm clock is going off every hour in earthquakes, floods, famines, droughts, pestilences, wars and rumors of wars, there is no sign of repentance. Our nation is not at the family altar and the prayer meeting. Revelry, not repentance, is the order of the day. ... But God is ever ready to bless his people when they repair the broken altars and pray for the old-time fire."
George Sweeting says Vance Havner ¿has traveled the length and breadth of America, calling our nation to repentance and faith. At the age of twelve he began to preach in the hill country of North Carolina and has preached well over 13,000 sermons since then. The heart of his ministry is revival. Courageously he speaks to our age, convicting our hearts, revealing our sins, and pointing to Jesus Christ as the only remedy. Havner says, `The tragedy of the hour is that the situation is desperate, but the saints are not. If they were, we would have revival.¿ Thousands of students and Christian workers have been revived and recharged through his ministry.¿In a chapter entitled ¿Wake Up and Get Up¿ Havner writes: ¿Have I ever bowed to the absolute sovereignty of the Holy Spirit? Do I lie to him, grieve him, quench him? Do I regard my body as his temple? Have I ever been filled with the Holy Spirit? Or would I rather miss a blessing than to give up a prejudice? The trouble with us today is that we say we are depending on the Holy Spirit; but we are actually so wired up with our own devices that if the fire does not fall from heaven, we can turn on a switch and produce false fire of our own. If there is no sound of a mighty rushing wind, our furnace is all set to blow hot air instead. God save us from a synthetic Pentecost!¿
The year 1973 marked a very low point in the life of Vance Havner, America¿s most quoted preacher. It was the year his beloved wife and companion of thirty-three years was struck down by a fatal and dreaded disease which distorted her lovely features and rendered her a helpless invalid. She departed this life to be forever with the Lord on September 2, 1973. Though I Walk Through the Valley is the chronicle of Vance Havner¿s passage through the darkest valley of his life, the record of how his faith in God triumphed in the crucible of suffering and bereavement. Don¿t expect these pages to be filled with time-worn clichés or pat answers. The book is written from the vantage point of one who has kept vigil alongside the hospital bed of his dying wife. People say things like, ¿I¿m so sorry you¿ve lost your wife.¿ Havner responds: ¿Lost is not the right word for Christians divided by death. You haven¿t lost anything when you know where it is!¿ People also say, ¿I know just how you feel,¿ to which Havner replies: ¿People often try to sympathize, but you have to go through this to know what it is like. You cannot share by imagination or observation. You have been there or you haven¿t.¿ ¿Now that she¿s gone, do the best you can.¿ Havner responds: ¿I want to do the best that Christ can do in me, exceedingly abundant above all I can ask or think.¿
In the awful confusion of these tragic days, many dear souls are weary of the torrent of words to no profit - stacks of books by blind leaders of the blind and panaceas from experts who do not know what the question is, much less the answer. They long to press through the throng to Christ himself and touch him for themselves. It is our hope and prayer that these meditations may help any and all who would see no man, but JESUS ONLY. There is only one safe and sure center of Christian experience, doctrine, and testimony and that is Jesus Christ. Stand at any other point, no matter how good, and you will become lopsided. Stand with him and you keep your balance, for by him all things consist. By him all Christian experience consists. The Christian life is simply Christ, the indwelling and outliving Christ. "To me to live is Christ." The victorious life or the abundant or deeper life, whatever you choose to call it, is just Christ, more of Christ and less of self. He is our life, not just a teacher of how to live.

These messages have been given all over the land and some have appeared in various Christian publications. They endeavor to strike the same note the writer has tried to sound through the years, and it is hoped that at no point will the trumpet give an uncertain sound, for it is high time that every soldier of Christ prepare himself for the battle. It is an age of itching ears. What we need is burning hearts. We need a heart-warming! Greensboro, N. C. V. H.
