If only this book weren’t needed. If only men and women didn’t beat their partners. If only spouses didn’t cruelly manipulate and control. If only people didn’t bully elderly relatives . . . Most incidents go under the radar, and it is estimated that only around a third come to the attention of the police. This book goes right to the heart of the matter: the human heart. We see how to walk with sufferers and apply the Bible to everyday-life situations. We learn how to do ‘one anothering’ in our churches and communities. While offering practical help, the author focuses strongly on lasting solutions that are achieved only through God’s power.

According to UNICEF, growing up with domestic violence is one of the most pervasive human rights violations in the world, affecting more than a billion people. Yet too few people are aware of the profound impact it can have. Invincibleseeks to change this lack of awareness and understanding with a compelling look at this important issue, informing and inspiring anyone who grew up living with domestic violence - and those who love them, work with them, teach them, and mentor them. Through powerful first-person stories, including the author's own experiences, as well as insightful commentary based on the most recent social science and psychology research, Invincible not only offers a deeper understanding of the concerns and challenges of those who grew up with domestic violence, but also provides proven strategies everyone can use to reclaim their lives and futures. 'When you grow up living with domestic violence, witnessing those you love tear each other down with physical and verbal blows, your brain doesn't know how to deal with that.' from the foreword by Tony RobbinsThe author is donating all net royalties to the Childhood Domestic Violence Association. 'I have never shared the fact that I was a child of domestic violence. And, if I had not met Brian Martin, I don't know if I would have. What appeals to me most about Brian's approach is that it is based on empowerment. Our experiences as children living with domestic violence have given us the equipment - a secret weapon, if you will - to overcome all kinds of obstacles in our lives. It means we are notvictims, we are victorious.' Tony Robbins, bestselling author and Peal Performance strategist 'Attention-grabbing and revealing, giving us insight into the world of CDV. It will be a valuable tool for our staff and New York City's most vulnerable population - its children.' Trevor M. Johns, acting associate commissioner, NYC Administration for Children's Services 'Martin's kindness shines through this book. And though many purported self-help books often have the stench of the obvious - House too cluttered? Throw out stuff! Overweight? Eat less, move more! - Invincible has the air of honesty and hard work, and the feeling of someone who wants to help. It is not easy reading. It is not pleasant reading. But for anyone who grew up in a violent household, it could very well be the most important reading.' NJ.com

A revised and updated edition of the groundbreaking work that changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. When Trauma and Recovery was first published in 1992, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, it has become the basic text for understanding trauma survivors. By placing individual experience in a broader political frame, Judith Herman argues that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Drawing on her own research on incest, as well as on a vast literature on combat veterans and victims of political terror, she shows surprising parallels between private horrors like child abuse and public horrors like war. A new epilogue reviews what has changed--and what has not changed--over two decades. Trauma and Recovery is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand how we heal and are healed.

"Has he ever hit you?" I hate the question. What is a "hit"? Many people think that domestic abuse is a slap across the face, or a kick, or a shove. And if it's not bad enough to go to the ER, if there are no bruises, cuts or broken bones, then maybe it wasn't that bad. "Just get over it." The answer to that question for me is, "Yes. He hit me once, early in our marriage, while I was driving the car." That hit had a profound effect on me. It made me feel stupid and deserving of punishment. Surely I said something "wrong." It also squelched my ability to communicate my feelings freely with my husband. What would happen if I said something "wrong" again? No, I am not dead. I haven't had stitches. I haven't had to visit the emergency room. But I am hurt....deeply hurt....over a very broken and abusive relationship with my husband. This is the story of how I learned to SURVIVE!
