A work first published in English in 1951, Waiting on God forms the best possible introduction to the work of Simone Weil, for it brings us into direct contact with this amazing personality, at once so pure, so ardent, so utterly sincere, yet normally so reserved that only her closest friends guessed the secrets of her inner life. The first part of the book concerns her letters written to the Reverend Father Perrin, O.P., who befriended her at Marseilles and, the only priest she knew, became her intimate friend. The second part of the book concerns essays and reflections on such subjects as education, human affliction and the love of God, prayer, and forms of the implicit love of God.

We spend much of our life waiting. For healing for ourselves or a friend. For a wayward daughter to return to God. For a new job. For marriage and children and grandchildren. Sometimes the waiting can cause us to feel stuck, or forgotten by God. But waiting time is not wasted time. These eight studies by Juanita Ryan help you draw near to God in times of uncertainty and postponement. As she leads you and your group through significant moments of waiting in Scripture, you will become familiar with the dynamics of such times and learn to hear God’s call to rest in his timing.

Why are so many baby boomers tuned into a quest for spirituality? How did growing up with the Bomb influence a generation's view of science and spirit? What effects did psychedelic drugs have on American spirituality? What is the difference between open-mindedness and gullibility? Is God a necessary part of a religious life? Is atheism merely a negation of religious belief, or is it something more? Waiting for God challenges us to become the God we seek: Like Prometheus, Bush steals the Heavenly Fire, and treasures a vision of planting it in his own heart and the hearts of his fellow men. Waiting for God offers a probing look at the generational factors - growing up with the Bomb, psychedelic drugs, environmental crisis, and more - that led the Woodstock generation down the path of spirituality. Waiting for God grasps, from an atheist's perspective, the sense of human interconnection that defines contemporary spirituality and poses challenges for skeptics and humanists to provide spiritual leadership in a hungry age.

No, says Marlinda Ireland, God has not forgotten! We may be caught in a “divine delay,” a time of waiting which holds a purpose and is an opportunity to learn enduring lessons. Learn from the biblical stories of men and women who persevered in waiting for God and discover four primary causes of delayed answers to prayer. Kierkegaard's God and the Good Life focuses on faith and love, two central topics in Kierkegaard's writings, to grapple with complex questions at the intersection of religion and ethics. Here, leading scholars reflect on Kierkegaard's understanding of God, the religious life, and what it means to exist ethically. The contributors then shift to psychology, hope, knowledge, and the emotions as they offer critical and constructive readings for contemporary philosophical debates in the philosophy of religion, moral philosophy, and epistemology. Together, they show how Kierkegaard continues to be an important resource for understandings of religious existence, public discourse, social life, and how to live virtuously.

Waiting For God O T

John Sparks is a writer, historian, former preacher, and healthcare worker living at Hagerhill, Kentucky. Waiting for God, O.T. is a collection of short stories on Appalachian life, told from the perspective of a medical worker, a fictional character named Tom Harmon. The tales, be they tall or short, are a mixed bag. John Sparks says about Tom, "In our junior year, the last spring semester before Tom and I went into our clinicals, the Drama Department put on the Samuel Beckett play Waiting for Godot and Tom read for and got the part of Lucky. He very nearly broke the audience up, those he didn't insult, with his rendition of Lucky thinking out loud. Tom sang and chanted the script while holding onto his ear and shaking hands with the other characters like an old-time mountain Baptist preacher. After the poison-pen letters started appearing in the town newspaper, one of the Deans threatened to expel us for that little prank. After we started our careers, Tom would pass an occasional recollection about the play to me and say that instead of waiting for Godot he was now waiting for God, O.T., using the common hospital abbreviation for overtime hours worked."
