Even though Rita knows that life has its ups and downs, she still wishes she could change her circumstances. So far, Fate has left her to live with her grandparents full-time with occasional visits from her mother, Coral, that are never quite enough to quell Rita’s sadness. Rita just wants some semblance of a normal existence, but when her grandmother passes suddenly, she has no idea just how drastically her life is about to change. Now stuck in the care of her once beautiful mother, who has declined into a walking disaster, Rita attempts to sort through her grief and dysfunctional situation, with the help of prayer. In the meantime, Coral moves them from place to place, as she searches for a man she hopes can save them all. When her mother becomes pregnant, Rita mistakenly thinks her prayers have been answered once her baby brother, Toby, arrives in the world. A series of bad choices then causes her family to become homeless and lead a nomadic existence that eventually lands them in Nevada, where Rita is happy that her life seems like it might finally begin to settle down—until the unexpected happens. A Circumstantial Chance is the poignant story of a young girl who must rise above seemingly insurmountable obstacles and find comfort and hope in God’s love and grace

Chance, and its representation in literature, has a long and problematic history. It is a vital aspect of the way we experience the world, and yet its function is frequently marginalised and downplayed. Offering a new reading of the development of the novel during the mid-twentieth century, Jordan argues that this simple novelistic paradox became more pressing during a period in which chance became a cultural, scientific and literary preoccupation - through scientific developments such as quantum mechanics and the uncertainty principle, the influence of existential philosophy, the growth of gambling, and the uncertainty provoked by the Second World War. In tracing the novel's representation of chance during this crucial period, we see both the development of the novel, and draw wider conclusions about the relationship between narrative and the contingent, the arbitrary and the uncertain. While the novel had historically rejected, marginalised or undermined chance, during this period it becomes a creative and welcome co-contributor to the novel's development, as writers such as Samuel Beckett, B.S. Johnson, Henry Green and Iris Murdoch show.
Unexpected Chances is a romantic suspense spin off novel from the One Night Series. I locked my heart and threw away the key, vowing to never let another man in. I even mastered how to keep the happy façade going to avoid the questions and looks from my family and friends. It all changed with one awkward meeting... Comes to find out he's not the person I thought he was... Carter Northwood is followed by lies, threats, and one disaster after another, but can I learn to look past it all?

Maurice Lee's study illustrates how writers such as Poe, Melville, Douglass, Thoreau, Dickinson, and others participated in a broad intellectual and cultural shift in which Americans increasingly learned to live with the threatening and wonderful possibilities of chance.

Shorn of context, unknown people look out to us from old and anonymous photographs, and each image has magical appeal. Alexander McCall Smith, one of the world's best-loved writers, has reimagined the stories of these individuals in this charming, humorous, unexpected and poignant collection. The fifteen photographs captured here are all from days long gone - some are formal in setting with a sepia tone, some are hazy family snaps. Every one of these images is powerful and intriguing in its own way and in Alexander's hands, each reveals a story of love.
