The Soul of Rumi is renowned poet Coleman Barks' first major assemblage of newly translated Rumi poems since his bestselling The Essential Rumi. Coleman Barks presents entirely new translations of Rumi's poems, published for the first time in The Soul of Rumi. The poems range over the breadth of Rumi's themes: silence, emptiness, play, God, peace, grief, sexuality, music, to name just a few. But the focus is on the ecstatic experience of human and divine love and their inseparability, conveyed with Rumi's signature passion, daring, and insights into the human heart and the heart's longings.

What is not known about me is that I was greatly influenced by the understandings and philosophy of the magi who were the followers of the sacred fire. I had thoughts put into my mind while I slept and during times of deep silence about the sacredness of all life and about how to accept things in life without discarding any of it. I followed this and never gave up on finding God, for in rejecting any part of God, I was rejecting God entirely. Now in modern times, people must carefully examine what supported them before and make adjustments and corrections wherever necessary. I wanted to bring my writings in a newer form that would suit your present Earth reality because of the changing times and planetary shift. To do this, I chose my old student, Rae (he was one of the students at the seminary in Konya), to bring forth this new understanding to help people remember the Law of One and the Family of God. I offer these poems in humble gratitude. — Rumi

Rumi's Little Book of Life is a beautiful collection of 196 poems by Rumi, previously unavailable in English. Translated by native Persian speakers, Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin, this collection will appeal to Rumi lovers everywhere. This collection of mystical poetry focuses on one of life's core issues: coming to grips with the inner life. During the course of life, each of us is engaged on an inner journey. Rumi's Little Book of Life is a guidebook for that journey. The poetry is a companion for those who consciously enter the inner world to explore the gardens within--out of the everyday "world of dust"--through an ascending hierarchy that restores one's soul to the heart; the heart of the spirit; and in finding spirit, transcending all.

2007 is the "Year of Rumi," and who better than Coleman Barks, Rumi's unlikely, supremely passionate ambassador, to mark the milestone of this great poet's 800th birthday? Barks, who was recently awarded an honorary doctorate in Persian language and literature by the University of Tehran for his thirty years of translating Rumi, has collected and translated ninety new poems, most of them never published before in any form. The result is this beautiful edition titled Rumi: Bridge to the Soul. The "bridge" in the title is a reference to the Khajou Bridge in Isphahan, Iran, which Barks visited with Robert Bly in May of 2006—a trip that in many ways prompted this book. The "soul bridge" also suggests Rumi himself, who crosses cultures and religions and brings us all together to listen to his words, regardless of origin or creed. Open this book and let Rumi's poetry carry you into the interior silence and joy of the spirit, the place that unites conscious knowing with a deeper, more soulful understanding.

Soul Encaged

This theoretical study is an exploration and interpretation of one of the most amorous and insightful poems of the Persian poet Rumi, through a Jungian archetypal lens. The selected story of Padeshah va Kanizak (The King and the Slave Girl) is about love, the love of transformation, individuation, and unification. Rumi’s work creates an unconscious activation of many archetypal voices and honors the psychological-imaginal world in ordinary life as a way to experience the numinous. The study brings Rumi’s treasure into the soul of depth psychology and through dialogue between Rumi and Jung, the researcher offers a creative connection between Jung’s concept of the individuation process and Rumi’s concept of “Vahdat” (unification) process. This process of dialogue neither reduces Rumi’s poetry to Jungian categories nor transforms Jungian psychology into poetry. An alchemical hermeneutic method within an imaginal approach allowed the researcher to engage Rumi’s poetry not only from the perspective of Rumi’s scholarship, but also from the perspective of her unconscious relationship to this work through her dreams, symptoms, feelings, intuitions, and synchronicities. In re-search with soul in mind, one has to differentiate what belongs to the work and what the researcher’s complexes bring to the work. The use of reverie and the four levels of transference dialogues are two ways of facilitating this differentiation. This blending of the researcher’s conscious and unconscious relation to the work enlarges the work beyond the researcher’s own complex intention and desires for the work. Mainstream psychology has its own nostalgic longing to find a home—a temenos—Khaneh-Gah—for soul to have a numinous experience. This study offers a psychology that not only welcomes an interdisciplinary approach, but also finds a new way of seeingpatients’ symptoms and their suffering as soul’s longing to be liberated and to re-connect to the source—the reed-bed . In addition, the affect of soul’s longing to create a love story—the union of one’s lover and beloved—is discussed from a depth psychological perspective in an effort to find a new way of nurturing and serving soul in the process of conducting psychotherapy.
