In a brilliant synthesis of genetic, archaeological, linguistic and climatic data, Oppenheimer challenges current thinking with his claim that there was only one successful migration out of Africa. In 1988 Newsweek headlined the startling discovery that everyone alive on the earth today can trace their maternal DNA back to one woman who lived in Africa 150,000 years ago. It was thought that modern humans populated the world through a series of migratory waves from their African homeland. Now an even more radical view has emerged, that the members of just one group are the ancestors of all non-Africans now alive, and that this group crossed the mouth of the Red Sea a mere 85,000 years ago. It means that not only is every person on the planet descended from one African 'Eve' but every non-African is related to a more recent Eve, from that original migratory group. This is a revolutionary new theory about our origins that is both scholarly and entertaining, a remarkable account of the kinship of all humans. Carl Anthony's memoir offers a new worldview to people of color. His work is both a personal story and an exposition of ideas that will appeal to those who appreciate thoughtful writing on issues of race, including individuals exploring their own identity and activists interested in democratizing power and advancing equitable policies for historically disenfranchised communities. Anthony interweaves urban history, racial justice, and cosmology with his experiences as an architect, regional planner, environmentalist, and Black American. These include life as an African American child in post-World War II Philadelphia, a student and civil rights activist in 1960s Harlem, a traveling student of West African architecture, and a pioneering environmental justice advocate in Berkeley and New York. This is a rich, insightful portrait of an American urbanist with a uniquely expansive perspective on human origins, who sets forth what he calls an "inclusive vision for a shared planetary future." Carl C. Anthony is revered as a social justice leader and the founding director of Urban Habitat, one of the country's first environmental justice organizations, known for pushing the mainstream environmental movement to confront issues of race and class. With colleague Luke Cole, Anthony published and edited the seminal Race, Poverty and Environment Journal. He is a co-founder of the Breakthrough Communities Initiative. Anthony has been president of Earth Island Institute, founded by David Brower, led the Ford Foundation's Sustainable Metropolitan Communities Initiative, and served as a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and the University of California, Berkeley.

Modern Humans is about the most recent—and perhaps the most important—phase of human evolution: the appearance of anatomically modern people (Homo sapiens) in Africa less than a quarter of a million years ago and their subsequent spread throughout the world. Most of the features that render living human beings unique among all forms of life evolved or developed with Homo sapiens, and in Modern Humans, John F. Hoffecker argues that humans represent a “major transition” in evolution with respect to the storage, transmission, and translation of information, as well as a quantum leap in living-system complexity. Modern Humans synthesizes data from genetics (including the rapidly growing body of ancient DNA), the human fossil record, and archaeology relating to the African origins and global dispersal of anatomically modern people. The book begins by placing humans into the broad context of the evolution of life, emphasizing the fundamental role of genetic and nongenetic forms of information in living systems, and how changes in information are tied to “major transitions” in evolution. For more than a hundred thousand years, a diverse “near modern” human population, characterized by the retention of some archaic skeletal traits and possibly lacking the full suite of cognitive faculties found in living people, occupied the African continent and expanded briefly into the adjoining Arabian Peninsula and Levant. The immediate ancestors of all living maternal and paternal lineages possibly emerged from within this population, spreading initially throughout Africa before beginning a second—and ultimately global—dispersal no later than 60,000 years ago. The later chapters of this book recount their rapid expansion into southern Asia and Australia, northern Eurasia and Beringia, and throughout the Americas.

Find your own personal Adam and Eve. Personal and oral history are evidence, but stronger still is DNA-driven genealogy. Make a time capsule, scrapbook or database of your family's founders. If you're interested in personal or oral history, DNA-driven genealogy, family history, ancestry, life stories, time capsules and tracing your own personal Adam and Eve, here's how to start researching your own family history at the cellular level when written records stop and oral history contributes to the evidence. What you're looking for in the search for your own origins and migrations is evidence. Every family has its own Adam and Eve-the original founders of a particular family line on either the male or female side. Find yours. Trace your ancestral founders through DNA-driven genealogy. Genealogists now can use molecular genealogy-comparing and matching people by matrilineal DNA lineages-mtDNA or patrilineal Y-chromosome ancestry and/or racial percentages tests. People interested in ancestry now look at genetic markers to trace the migrations of the human species. Here's how to trace your genealogy by DNA from your grandparents back 10,000 or more years. Anyone can be interested in DNA for ancestry research. Build a time capsule documenting, how your own family is a mosaic of communities. What markers will shed light on your deepest ancestry? Discover the geographic travels and dwelling places of some of your ancestors. What's random and what's not? Use these tools to study the history of your ancestors as part of a larger population. Look for similar patterns.

Evolution What Dawkins Did Not Tell You

The notion that those of us who are Christians are some kind of flat?earthers, who are impervious to reason and evidence-based science, is utterly false. For atheism to succeed as an ideology, humanists must find an alternative explanation to creation and intelligent design. Therefore, there is a hard push for molecule-to-man evolution to be accepted as dogma. In this book, a robust riposte is presented to the current most popular book pushing this concept on the unsuspecting public (The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins). A lot of research has gone into Evolution: What Dawkins Did Not Tell you, and the thinking of several other leading scientists is encapsulated. What is clear to the author at the end of his exhaustive research, is that macroevolution, just like green men on Mars, is desperate wishful thinking. It is hoped this book will be read by the lay public, scientists, college and high school students, evolutionists, creationists, as well as policy makers in education and political leaders. If read with an open mind, there can be only one conclusion: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
