A couple of years ago, I had an epiphany about gratitude from reading Brené Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection. Many times, in my life, I experienced fear or sadness because of the difficulties of life. I allowed myself to be viscerally overwhelmed by focusing on these hardships. However, by focusing on the hardships, it formed a tornado of emotional suffering, shame, and dissatisfaction. When I found myself spinning in this tornado, I would make decisions to escape from the emotional suffering instead of trying to solve the difficulty I was going through. I would medicate, distract, or detach, thereby making the difficulty worse and thus exponentially created more suffering, shame and dissatisfaction. This created a vicious whirlwind, that at times, seemed impossible to abscond. When I read about joyous people practicing gratitude in Brené Brown's book, it changed my life. As soon as I began practicing gratitude, the darkness of my temperament dissipated. This helped me to not make the situation worse by making another bad decision while, at the same time, giving me the strength to concentrate on solving the true problem. Practicing gratitude is not a magic pill that solves everything. But it has been the spark I needed to start the fire. Instead of spending my resources on medicating the suffering coming from pessimism, I was able to use those same resources toward making my life better. I practice gratitude as soon as I get up in the morning, thinking of anything and everything I am appreciating about my life. And throughout the day, when difficulties present themselves, when analyzing those situations, I begin with gratitude. This has been so powerful for me, that is has become one of the values my family espouses. My wife and I hold each other accountable to being grateful and walk our children through the practice. One of the things that she tried to do was to find a journal for all of us, thereby allowing us to write down our gratitude lists. After a week of searching and not finding anything suitable, I asked myself, "Why don't I just create one?" So, this is how this journal originated.

Explores how the emotional experience of gratitude has been enlisted in neoliberal governance through the language of debt. In The Art of Gratitude, Jeremy David Engels sketches a genealogy of gratitude from the ancient Greeks to the contemporary self-help movement. One of the most striking things about gratitude, Engels finds, is how consistently it is described using the language of indebtedness. A chief purpose of this, he contends, is to make us more comfortable living lives in debt, with the nefarious effect of pacifying the citizenry so we are less likely to speak out about social and economic injustice. To counteract this, he proposes an alternative art of gratitude-as-thanksgiving that is inspired by Indian philosophy, particularly the yoga philosophy of the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutras. He argues that this art of gratitude can challenge neoliberalism by reorienting our politics away from resentment, anger, and guilt and toward a democratic ethic of thanksgiving and the common good. “In the contemporary moment, when gratitude is widely touted as the panacea to many of our ills, Jeremy Engels provides a timely critical genealogy of this emotion, showing how it has been used for social control, and how it affirms the state of indebtedness at the heart of neoliberalism.
