From #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory comes the stunning first novel of a thrilling trilogy about the Lacey family, and the captivating woman at the heart of a power-hungry estate willing to go to any means to protect her family name. Beatrice Lacey, as strong-minded as she is beautiful, refuses to conform to the social customs of her time. Destined to lose her heritage and beloved Wideacre estate once she is wed, Beatrice will use any means necessary to protect her ancestral name. Seduction, betrayal, even murder—Beatrice’s passion is without apology or conscience. “She is a Lacey of Wideacre,” her father warns, “and whatever she does, however she behaves, will always be fitting.” Yet even as Beatrice’s scheming seems about to yield her dream, she is haunted by the one living person who knows the extent of her plans...and her capacity for evil. Sumptuously set in Georgian England from the “queen of royal fiction” (USA TODAY), Wideacre is intensely gripping, rich in texture, and full of color and authenticity. It is a saga as irresistible in its singular magic as its heroine.
#1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory weaves an unforgettable tale of a young woman’s sorcery and desire in Henry VIII’s England, where magic, lust, and power are forever intertwined. Growing up as an abandoned outcast on the moors, young Alys’ only company is her cruel foster mother, Morach, the local wise woman who is whispered to practice the dark arts. Alys joins a nunnery to escape the poverty and loneliness she has felt all her life, but all too soon her sanctuary is destroyed. King Henry VIII’s followers burn the holy place to the ground, and Alys only just manages to escape with her life, haunted by the screams of her sisters as they burned to death. She finds work in a castle not far from where she grew up as an old lord’s scribe, where she falls obsessively in love with his son Hugo. But Hugo is already married to a proud woman named Catherine. Driven to desperation by her desire, she summons the most dangerous powers Morach taught her, but quickly the passionate triangle of Alys, Hugo, and Catherine begins to explode, launching them into uncharted sexual waters. The magic Alys has conjured now has a life of its own—a life that is horrifyingly and disastrously out of control. Is she a witch? Since heresy means the stake, and witchcraft the rope, Alys is in mortal danger, treading a perilous path between her faith and her own power.
In 1453, seventeen-year-old Luca Vero, accused of heresy and expelled from his monastery, is recruited to help investigate evil across Europe but frees his first subject, Isolde, from captivity in a nunnery, and together they seek the one who defends the boundaries of Christendom and holds the secrets of the Order of Darkness.
This is the third volume in the bestselling Wideacre Trilogy of novels. Set in the eighteenth century, they launched the career of Philippa Gregory , the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin’s Lover.

"Land Use Systems in Grassland Dominated Regions" was the stimulating theme of the 20th General Meeting of the European Grassland Federation. This topic was not solely tailored to Switzerland and the other countries in the Alpine zone, but also to all other European regions dominated by grassland. In such regions, grasslands are fundamental for agricultural production and landscape value, including the conservation of natural resources. Changes or losses of the basic functions of grassland can have dramatic impacts on regional developments in grassland areas. In adapting these functions, grassland farming faces tremendous challenges caused by economic, political and technical factors. The emphasis of the conference was on five aspects. The first topic dealt with the difficulty in combining ecological and economic goals on a farm scale and at a regional level under given ecological conditions and agro-environmental policy regimes. The second was dedicated to the fact that grassland meets human needs through the services that it provides to society. This was shown by highlighting the benefits and potential risks of grassland systems. The third aspect concerned the efficient use of plant nutrients in soil-plant-animal systems in order to optimise grass growth and minimise environmental impacts. The fourth session concentrated on the relevance of forage quality for the quality and safety of dairy and meat products, and the last session was dedicated to the transfer of knowledge into agricultural practise. This book contains all abstracts of the conference papers. Also available are the complete proceedings.
