THE LONG-AWAITED new title from Amazon bestselling author Lucy H. Pearce. Burning Woman is a breath-taking and controversial woman's journey through history- personal and cultural-on a quest to find and free her own power. Uncompromising and all-encompassing, Pearce uncovers the archetype of the Burning Women of days gone by-Joan of Arc and the witch trials, through to the way women are burned today in cyber bullying, acid attacks, shaming and burnout, fearlessly examining the roots of Feminine power-what it is, how it has been controlled, and why it needs to be unleashed on the world during our modern Burning Times. Burning Woman explores: Burning from within: a woman's power-how to build it, engage it and not be destroyed by it. Burning from without: the role of shame, and honour in the time-worn ways the dominant culture uses fire to control the Feminine. The darkness: overcoming our fear of the dark, and discovering its importance in cultivating power. This incendiary text was written for women who burn with passion, have been burned with shame, and who at another time, in another place, would have been burned at the stake. With contributions from leading burning women of our era: Isabel Abbott, ALisa Starkweather, Shiloh Sophia McCloud, Molly Remer, Julie Daley, Bethany Webster ...

The Venging

Genre : Fiction
File Size : 81.97 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

Hailed by readers and critics alike, The Venging has been described as an “excellent collection” and its author praised as “one of the freshest writers to break into the science fiction field in many a year.” This is the first published collection of short stories by one of the foremost voices in science fiction today. This significant volume contains many characters and situations that later evolved into their own novels. “Mandala” features technologically perfect cities that eject their sinful human occupants, a premise that can be found at the root of Bear’s later novel, Strength of Stones. In “Hardfought,” Bear brilliantly handles the classic science fiction dilemma of human communication with aliens. Other stories include “The Wind From a Burning Woman” in which a woman holds the world hostage by controlling a giant asteroid; “Scattershot,” in which the inhabitants of many universes meet in an undefined limbo space; and the Nebula Award finalist “Petra,” a story of a world where chaos rules, stone moves, and the mind controls reality.

The Burning Women Of Farcry

The Burning Women of Far Cry is something like a cross between a George Saunders yarn and a David Lynch film, coached into book form by Thorne Smith.Rick DeMarinis's masterpiece is as grim and unflinching an existential portrait of life as Nausea, or The Stranger, or Woman in the Dunes-except those books don't also make you laugh out loud. If David Lynch had written a novel instead of making movies, it might have looked something like The Burning Women of Far Cry.We have dream sequences involving dwarfs, and the amputated limb as a key plot point, but underneath it all is the presentation of an unheimlich world much like the one in Blue Velvet: just beneath the veneer of white-picket fences and smiling housewives and industrious businessmen lurks a ghastly hell of monstrous inhumanity.Innocuous artifacts of urban life take on sinister overtones-the "Gopher Cones" that the Red Devil Pushcart Vendors sell, for example, or the motif of the jazz standards that Gent and Jack play in their basement jam sessions. But at the same time, it's hard not to picture The Simpsons throughout this story, especially, for example, the voice of Troy McClure narrating the more absurd moments. The most prominent element of The Burning Women of Far Cry is the inexhaustible imagination driving the writing.

In early modern Europe, the circulation of visual and verbal transmissions of sati, or Hindu widow burning, not only informed responses to the ritualized violence of Hindu culture, but also intersected in fascinating ways with specifically European forms of ritualized violence and European constructions of gender ideology. European accounts of women being burned in India uncannily commented on the burnings of women as witches and criminal wives in Europe. When Europeans narrated their accounts of sati, perhaps the most striking illustration of Hindu patriarchal violence, they did not specifically connect the act of widow burning to a corresponding European signifier: the gruesome ceremonial burnings of women as witches. In examining early modern representations of sati, the book focuses specifically on those strategies that enabled European travellers to protect their own identity as uniquely civilized amidst spectacular displays of 'Eastern barbarity'.

In India, one woman is murdered every hour by her husband's family for a dowry. The Burning Bride follows the story of Uma, a newlywed woman. She starts her new life with many dreams. However, her dreams turn into nightmares when her parents are unable to fulfil the dowry demands made by Madhu, her mother-in-law. The heaven she had imagined transforms into a hell, and the worst part is; there appears to be no escape. Violence against women is high in India but the irony is that Indian people worship women in the forms of many goddesses. The most commonly worshipped goddess is Durga who has nine forms. Therefore The Burning Bride is told through nine women's perspectives. The multiple perspectives highlights social, psychological and cultural factors which allow the dowry system to claim so many lives every year. At least 10% of the profits made from the sales of The Burning Bride will support the Asian Circle to fund Oxfam projects to end domestic violence in India.
