Water, in all its forms, may be the key to an environmentally friendly energy economy. Water is free, there is plenty of it, plus it carries what is generally believed to be the best long-term source of green energy—hydrogen. Water for Energy and Fuel Production explores the many roles of water in the energy and fuel industry. The text not only discusses water’s use as a direct source of energy and fuel—such as hydrogen from water dissociation, methane from water-based clathrate molecules, hydroelectric dams, and hydrokinetic energy from tidal waves, off-shore undercurrents, and inland waterways—but also: Describes water’s benign application in the production of oil, gas, coal, uranium, biomass, and other raw fuels, and as an energy carrier in the form of hot water and steam Examines water’s role as a reactant, reaction medium, and catalyst—as well as steam’s role as a reactant—for the conversion of raw fuels to synthetic fuels Explains how supercritical water can be used to convert fossil- and bio-based feedstock to synthetic fuels in the presence and absence of a catalyst Employing illustrative case studies and commercial examples, Water for Energy and Fuel Production demonstrates the versatility of water as a provider of energy and fuel, conveying the message that as energy demand and environmental concerns grow, so should our vigilance in pursuing the role of water in the energy landscape.

Abstract: The growth of Ag [email protected] [email protected] nanoparticles (denoted as Ag [email protected]@Ag NPs) is achieved by a one-step, template-free hydrothermal method using Ag3 PO4 -AgCl as the catalyst precursor and naturally available glucose as the carbon source. In the hydrothermal process, freshly prepared AgCl together with the active Ag 0 particles produced by the Ag3 PO4 –glucose redox reaction cocatalyzes the growth of tubular CNFs and leads to in situ assembly of the coaxial one-dimensional nanostructure of Ag [email protected], with ultrasmall Ag NPs well dispersed outside. The structure and composition are characterized using various advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The fabricated Ag [email protected]@Ag NPs composite displays superb catalytic activities for the photodegradation of the organic pollutant methylene blue under visible light, which is contributed by the excellent adsorption ability of CNFs as well as the unique electron transport property afforded by the synergistic effect between Ag NW-Ag NP and conductive CNF. Coupled with economical, environmentally friendly synthetic process, sustainability of precursor, and versatility of material, the novel ternary composite developed in this study paves a new way for the fabrication of other carbon material-based hybrids to improve heterogeneous catalysis and solar-driven photocatalytic applications. This book reviews the recent advances in hydrothermal conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels, and consists of 15 chapters. It introduces the properties of high-temperature water, the merits of hydrothermal conversion of biomass, and some novel hydrothermal conversion processes, mainly including hydrothermal production of value-added products, hydrothermal gasification, hydrothermal liquefaction and hydrothermal carbonization. This book introduces a new concept for counteracting the imbalance in the carbon cycle, which is caused by the rapid consumption of fossil fuels in anthropogenic activities in combination with the slow formation of fossil fuels. Accordingly, the book is useful in conveying a fundamental understanding of hydrothermal conversion of biomass in the carbon cycle so that a contribution can be made to achieving sustainable energy and environment. It is also interesting to a wide readership in various fields including chemical, geologic and environmental science and engineering. Fangming Jin is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Environmental Science & Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China
