This is a must-read for anyone trained in traditional process improvement or business architecture. In surprisingly clear language this book lays out the essentials of service thinking, and how the service paradigm transforms the way in which organizations innovate on behalf of their customers. It shifts the focus from product to experience, from one-sided production to co-creation of value, from the simply measurable to the emotional. I intend to buy a copy for every member of my team—Dart Lindsley, Cisco Sr. Manager of Transformation Planning and Analysis This book will introduce you to Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME)—a term introduced by IBM to describe service science, which is the application of science, management, and engineering disciplines to tasks that one organization beneficially performs for and with another. The authors detail the disciplines, principles, insights and tools of SSME that are now ready to transition to the mainstream business world with transformative effect. They coin the new term “Service Thinking” to communicate this mainstream business transformation. It includes expository case histories of the service thinking-based transformation of familiar businesses, illustrating the seven principles of service thinking, with compelling examples and clear direction for application.

See how the principles of Service Science govern the dynamics driving the adoption of cloud computing in the industry. Cloud as Service shows you how the evolution of enterprise computing platforms to application-specific cloud platforms (ASCPs) have aligned to business needs. You'll also learn processes for developing and building ASCPs. You'll gain insight into how executives, managers, and technologists are utilizing cloud services, cloud service providers, equipment manufacturers, and software and application vendors participating in cloud supply chains. For business, the appeal of cloud computing must go beyond the notion of convenient, on-demand access of networked pooled access to computing resources. Industry leaders have learned to apply cloud computing to become more nimble, cost effective, and customer engaging as they strive for competitive advantage, regardless of size. These companies define and build cloud platforms customized for their needs rather than using someone else’s. This book shows you how to use a holistic, end-to-end view of platform planning, platform development, supply chains and operations to collapse platform development times to a fraction of the original time. You’ll see that strategies for selling to the cloud market are essentially incomplete; and that in order to be successful, businesses must become cloud service businesses themselves, incorporating cloud technologies in their engineering, IT, sales and marketing, and delivery processes. What You'll Learn: Historical perspective to provide insight into the dynamics driving cloud evolution today State of the art in IT requirements and cloud solutions The value of User Experience (UX) driven design principles The crucial roles of Service Brokers and Service Assurance Managers The landscape of emerging cloud services and what they mean to your enterprise Service Portals and Enterprise Service Buses Who This Book Is For: CIOs, CTOs, data center architects, solution architects and application engineers Educational institutions building a systems integration curriculum Developers who want to understand how their work fits in the cloud ecosystem

This book takes the position that organizations, such as businesses and government agencies, form a special class of living system. As such, they come into being, live through lifecycle stages, and can experience organizational health and various forms of organizational illness along the way. If the latter is frequent or extended, such organizations often die an untimely death. A services perspective can go a long way to combat this outcome and assist in maintaining organizational health. Allowing this perspective to permeate, an organization induces a consideration of its genuine value and leads to a greater understanding of the breadth of stakeholders who are the beneficiaries of it.

Business Engineering attempts to provide tools, as other engineering disciplines have, for the design of businesses. This implies that enterprises should be formally designed and that their architectures, including processes, people organization, information systems, IT infrastructure and interactions with customers and suppliers should be considered in a systemic way in such design. This Enterprise Design is not a onetime effort, but, in the dynamic environment we face, organizations have to have the capability to continuously evaluate opportunities to improve their designs. Our approach includes the integrated design of a business, its service configuration (architecture) and capacity planning, the resource management processes and the operating processes. Such an approach is based on general patterns that define service design options and analytical methods that make possible resource optimization to meet demand. This is complemented with technology that allows process execution with BPMN tools and web services over SOA. In summary we integrate the design of a business with analytics and supporting IT tools in giving a sound basis for Business Engineering Our proposal has been extensively tested and improved based on the experience with hundreds of projects in all types of service industries performed at the Master in Business Engineering of the University of Chile. Several of such cases, which have had impressive economics results, are summarized in the text. In particular, we have worked on hospital services, where research and development projects that have been performed in five public hospitals will originate general solutions, summarized in the book, which will eventually be implemented in over a hundred facilities.

This book begins an adventure wherein the author outlines for us the particular shape our minds impose on that journey; he takes as his analytic, the human sensorium: the panoply of sensory channels (sight, hearing, touch, etc.) we use to grasp our world. His primary insight is that our sensorium does not, beyond immediate social groups, present smooth, mirror-like vistas of our socially networked world. Contrariwise, he shows that this uniquely human array of channels presents a mosaic of disparate inputs with subtle fissures and sutures between and among them. That more sophisticated view of our sensory apparatus allows him to describe with great practicality, the fissured, segmented architectures we inject into our enterprises and, above all, our markets. These insights particularly illuminate the revolution reshaping our understanding of the basic couplet of value exchange driving markets: Buying and selling. In this revolution a more telling focus on services as catalysts of value exchange is supplanting the traditional terms: goods and product, as the architecture of that very human sensorium broached above modulates value exchange across the chain of institutional need in markets. Armed with this novel set of insights, we come away with a far better sense of what is happening Òoverhead,Ó as we work out our missions and careers amid our socially constructed edifices: enterprises, institutions, and their battlegrounds, our markets.

How can management be developed to create the greatest wealth for society as a whole? This is the question Peter Drucker sets out to answer in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. A brilliant, mould-breaking attack on management orthodoxy it is one of Drucker’s most important books, offering an excellent overview of some of his main ideas. He argues that what defines an entrepreneur is their attitude to change: ‘the entrepreneur always searches for change, responds to it and exploits it as an opportunity’. To exploit change, according to Drucker, is to innovate. Stressing the importance of low-tech entrepreneurship, the challenge of balancing technological possibilities with limited resources, and the organisation as a learning organism, he concludes with a vision of an entrepreneurial society where individuals increasingly take responsibility for their own learning and careers. Wonder. Appreciation. Awareness. Wholeness…In the Western world of the fifteenth century, these personal qualities were all boldly embodied in one extraordinary man. In this bold new guide to awakening the soul, Michael Gelb draws on Leonardo’s writings, inventions, and works of art to show how you, too, can practice the seven essential principles by which Leonardo lived and worked: Filled with practical exercises that will help you put each of the seven principles into use, a series of reflective questions designed for self-assessment, and inspirational sayings drawn from the world’s great wisdom traditions, Da Vinci Decoded offers a wide range of tools to use in your spiritual quest. The first step-by-step guidebook for successful innovation planning Unlike other books on the subject, 101 Design Methods approaches the practice of creating new products, services, and customer experiences as a science, rather than an art, providing a practical set of collaborative tools and methods for planning and defining successful new offerings. Strategists, managers, designers, and researchers who undertake the challenge of innovation, despite a lack of established procedures and a high risk of failure, will find this an invaluable resource. Novices can learn from it; managers can plan with it; and practitioners of innovation can improve the quality of their work by referring to it.
