A phenomenonally precicious schoolboy, Rimbaud was still a teenager when he became notorious as Europe's most shocking and exhilarating poet. During his brief 5-year reign as the enfant terrible of French literature he produced an extraordinary body of poems that range from the exquisite to the obsene, while simultaneously living a life of dissolute excess with his lover and fellow poet, Verlaine. At the age of 21, he abandonned poetry and travelled across Europe before settling in Africa as an arms trader. This edition sets the two sides of Rimbaud side by side with a sparkling translation of his most exhilarating poetry and a generous selection of the letters from the harsh and colourful period of his life as a colonial trader.

This selection of poetry and prose by Mirza Asadullah Khan, known as Ghalib (1797-1869), provides an accessible and wide-ranging introduction to the preeminent Urdu poet of the nineteenth century. Ghalib’s poems, especially his ghazals, remain beloved throughout South Asia for their arresting intelligence and charming wit. His letters—informal, humorous, and deeply personal—provide a glimpse into his colorful character. These careful translations allow readers with little or no knowledge of Urdu to appreciate the wide range of his poetry, from his bursts of inimitable simplicity to the finer points of his richly layered aesthetic. Beginning with a critical introduction of his life and work to nonspecialists and specialists alike, Frances Pritchett and Owen Cornwall present a selection of Ghalib’s works, carefully explaining details of poetic form in annotations distilled from years of scholarly engagement with the commentarial tradition. Their translation maintains line-for-line accuracy and thereby preserves complex poetic devices that play upon the tension between the two lines of each verse. The book includes whole ghazals, selected individual verses from other ghazals, poems in other genres, and letters. The book also includes a glossary, the Urdu text of the original poetry, and an appendix with a translation of every instance in his letters in which Ghalib commented on his own verses.

Only collection of this fine war poet's work in print. Isaac Rosenberg (1890-1918) has long been regarded as one of the most important artistic figures of the First World War. His poems, such as "Dead Man's Dump" and "Break of Day in the Trenches," have been included in every war anthology and have earned him a place in England's Poet's Corner. He studied at the Slade School of Art, showing promise as a painter. His poverty, education, and background made him an outsider, yet it was just that experience that equipped him to cope with the unforeseen horror of war in the trenches: "I am determined that this war, with all its powers for devastation, shall not master my poeting." Enlisting in the Army in October 1915 he served on the Western Front until his death on night patrol in April 1918. Inexplicably for such a major poet, Rosenberg's work has been out of print for many years. In this collection his biographer Jean Liddiard has made a substantial selection of his finest poems and most revealing letters, providing also an authoritative introduction and a detailed chronology.

Born in Syria in 1930, Adonis is one of the most celebrated poets of the Arabic-speaking world. His poems have earned international acclaim, and his influence on Arabic literature has been likened to that of T. S. Eliot’s on English-language verse. This volume serves as the first comprehensive survey of Adonis’s work, allowing English readers to admire the arc of a remarkable literary career through the labors of the poet’s own handpicked translator, Khaled Mattawa. Experimental in form and prophetic in tone, Adonis’s poetry sings exultantly of both the sweet promise of eros and the lingering problems of the self. Steeped in the anguish of exile and the uncertainty of existence, Adonis demonstrates the poet’s profound affection for Arabic and European lyrical traditions even as his poems work to destabilize those very aesthetic and moral sensibilities. This collection positions the work of Adonis within the pantheon of the great poets of exile, including César Vallejo, Joseph Brodsky, and Paul Celan, providing for English readers the most complete vision yet of the work of the man whom the cultural critic Edward Said called “today’s most daring and provocative Arab poet.”
