Continually increasing demands on infrastructures mean that maintenance and renewal require timely, appropriate action that maximizes benefits while minimizing cost. To be as well informed as possible, decision-makers must have an optimal understanding of an infrastructure’s condition—what it is now, and what it is expected to be in the future. Written by two highly respected engineers, the second volume, Infrastructure Health in Civil Engineering: Applications and Management, integrates the decision making concept into theoretical and practical issues. It covers: State-of-the-art practice and future directions Use of probability and statistics in areas including structural modeling Specific practical applications, including retrofitting and rehabilitation in response to earthquake damage, corrosion, fatigue, and bridge security Use of IHCE for management and maintenance of different types of structures using pre-stressed and reinforced concrete, and fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) Numerous practical case studies, as well as coverage of the latest techniques in the use of sensors for damage detection and load testing Built to correspond to the ideas presented in its companion volume, Theory and Components, this is an invaluable guide to optimized, cost-saving methods that will help readers meet safety specifications for new projects, as well as the aging infrastructure at great risk of failure.

In the last decades, the technology of dam protection has undergone major advancements. The increasing demand for safety in modern society has created the need for cost-effective measures to protect critical infrastructure such as dams. This situation has resulted in the drafting of new regulations and technical manuals in countries like Norway, Sweden, and the USA, among others. Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage includes the latest advances in dam protection, and a portfolio of applications in representative case studies. The main topics include: - Failure of embankment and concrete dams due to overtopping or accidental leakage - Hard protections for embankment dams (RCC, wedge-shaped blocks, reinforced concrete slabs) - Soft protections for embankment dams (rockfill toes, articulated concrete blocks, vegetation cover) - Concrete dam protections and additional issues directly related to dam protections The book includes contributions from the 1st International Seminar on Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage (Madrid, Spain, 24-26 November 2014), and also a summary of the technical manual "Overtopping Protection for Dams", published by the US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in March 2014. Dam Protections against Overtopping and Accidental Leakage provides a comprehensive summary of dam protections, covering case studies and applied research worldwide, and will be invaluable to professionals and academics in Dam Engineering.

Scour and Erosion includes four keynote lectures from world leading researchers cutting across the themes of scour and erosion, together with 132 peer-reviewed papers from 34 countries, covering the principal themes of: - internal erosion - sediment transport - grain scale to continuum scale - advanced numerical modelling of scour and erosion - terrestrial scour and erosion- river and estuarine erosion including scour around structures, and - management of scour/erosion and sediment, including hazard management and sedimentation in dams and reservoirs. Scour and Erosion is ideal for researchers and industry working at the forefront of scour and erosion, and has applications in both the freshwater and marine environments. The 8th International Conference on Scour and Erosion (ICSE 2016, Oxford, UK, 12-15 September 2016) was organized by HR Wallingford under the guidance of the Technical Committee 213 for Scour and Erosion of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). This biennial conference draws together leading academics, scientists and engineers engaged in scour and erosion research to present and exchange their latest scientific findings. Scour and Erosion, together with the eight previous proceedings dating from 2002, present a solid collection of technical and scientific developments in scour and erosion research which have been established over the last 14 years.

Waves breaking on structures in the coastal zone cause bottom material to be tossed into suspension and carried from the region by longshore or other currents. The scour holes that develop may require substantial amounts of material for rehabilitation and may even endanger the functional integrity of the structure. Although much work has been performed to investigate and understand local scour of noncohesive material in unidirectional flow, relatively little has been spent on the problem of local scour around structures under wave action. Less work has been performed on the problem of scour under the dual processes of wave motion and unidirectional flow. Many of the theoretical investigations regarding scour and erosion under wave-induced effects have been found on earlier work regarding scour and sediment transport mechanics developed from river aspects. These unidirectional theories have been modified to account for the increased shear stress and pressure variations induced by the oscillatory wave field. This report is a survey of the existing literature that has been directed toward understanding the sediment transport by wave and current actions, and the scouring and erosion problems that result around major structures as a result of these phenomena. The primary forcing function is the incoming surface gravity wave train in most cases, and refraction causes concentrations of wave energy that increase scouring potential. The bottom hydrography is altered, and this is reflected in changes to the refraction patterns of the wave system.
