The Amazon Indian is an icon that straddles the world between the professional anthropologist and the popular media. Presented alternately as the noble primitive, the savior of the environment, and as a savage, dissolute, cannibalistic half-human, it is an image well worth examining. Stephen Nugent does just that, critiquing the claims of authoritativeness inherent in visual images presented by anthropologists of Amazon life in the early 20th century and comparing them with the images found in popular books, movies, and posters. The book depicts the field of anthropology as its own form of culture industry and contrasts it to other similar industries, past and present. For visual anthropologists, ethnographers, Amazon specialists, and popular culture researchers, Nugent's book will be enlightening, entertaining reading.

Agriculture And The Risk Of Crop Loss Due To Flooding In The Amazon River Floodplain Of Peru

"The floodplain of the Amazon river offers much potential for agriculture but it is a risk-filled environment for farmers working the fertile but flood-prone land. The annual flood deposits nutrient-rich sediment from the Andes, which allows for high agricultural productivity during the low water season. While the annual flood provides an essential boost to fertility, the risk of crop loss influences farmers to make production decisions that are safe and may not take advantage of the fertility in a way that maximizes profitability, e.g., selecting low yielding, short duration varieties. In this thesis, I describe agricultural practices in the floodplain, identify the risks to agricultural production with emphasis on rice loss due to flooding, and examine how behavioural characteristics influence flood risk reduction strategies while scoping the opportunities for risk reduction programming for the region. Data were gathered among farmers in four communities along the Amazon river near Iquitos, Peru from household surveys (n=83) on crop loss, perceived risks, coping strategies, willingness to pay for risk reduction programming, and a risk preference experiment. Additional data were gathered from focus groups discussion (n=8), key informant interviews (n=9), and a land elevation survey. Production in the floodplain can be profitable; however, potential crop loss from flooding can be high. There are opportunities for risk reduction - especially through index-based insurance - to assist farmers to make fuller use of the Amazon floodplain." --

As developing countries with recent histories of isolation and extreme poverty, followed by restoration and reform, both Cambodia and Vietnam have seen new opportunities and demands for non-state actors to engage in and manage the effects of rapid socio-economic transformation. This book examines how in both countries, civil society actors and the state manage their relationship to one another in an environment that is continuously shaped and (re)constructed by changing legislation, collaboration and negotiation, advocacy and protest, and social control. Further, it explores the countries’ divergent experiences whilst also uncovering the underlying basis and drivers of civil society activity that are shared by Cambodia and Vietnam. Crucially, this book engages with the contested nature of civil society and how it is socially constructed through research and development activities, by looking at contemporary discourses and manifestations of civil society in the two countries, including national and community-level organisations, associations, and networks that operate in a variety of sectors, such as gender, the environment and health. Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted in Cambodia and Vietnam, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Southeast Asian studies, Southeast Asian politics, development studies and civil society.

Incomplete or missed requirements, omissions, ambiguous product features, lack of user involvement, unrealistic customer expectations, and the proverbial scope creep can result in cost overruns, missed deadlines, poor product quality, and can very well ruin a project. Project Scope Management: A Practical Guide to Requirements for Engineering, Product, Construction, IT and Enterprise Projects describes how to elicit, document, and manage requirements to control project scope creep. It also explains how to manage project stakeholders to minimize the risk of an ever-growing list of user requirements. The book begins by discussing how to collect project requirements and define the project scope. Next, it considers the creation of work breakdown structures and examines the verification and control of the scope. Most of the book is dedicated to explaining how to collect requirements and how to define product and project scope inasmuch as they represent the bulk of the project scope management work undertaken on any project regardless of the industry or the nature of the work involved. The book maintains a focus on practical and sensible tools and techniques rather than academic theories. It examines five different projects and traces their development from a project scope management perspective—from project initiation to the end of the execution and control phases. The types of projects considered include CRM system implementation, mobile number portability, port upgrade, energy-efficient house design, and airport check-in kiosk software. After reading this book, you will learn how to create project charters, high-level scope, detailed requirements specifications, requirements management plans, traceability matrices, and a work breakdown structure for the projects covered.
