Andre Gunder Frank asks us to ReOrient our views away from Eurocentrism--to see the rise of the West as a mere blip in what was, and is again becoming, an Asia-centered world. In a bold challenge to received historiography and social theory he turns on its head the world according to Marx, Weber, and other theorists, including Polanyi, Rostow, Braudel, and Wallerstein. Frank explains the Rise of the West in world economic and demographic terms that relate it in a single historical sweep to the decline of the East around 1800. European states, he says, used the silver extracted from the American colonies to buy entry into an expanding Asian market that already flourished in the global economy. Resorting to import substitution and export promotion in the world market, they became Newly Industrializing Economies and tipped the global economic balance to the West. That is precisely what East Asia is doing today, Frank points out, to recover its traditional dominance. As a result, the "center" of the world economy is once again moving to the "Middle Kingdom" of China. Anyone interested in Asia, in world systems and world economic and social history, in international relations, and in comparative area studies, will have to take into account Frank's exciting reassessment of our global economic past and future. Most Americans know their democracy has been hijacked by Big Money; that politicians are working for their rich contributors and leaving We The People in the lurch. The Tea Party knows it, and so too does the Occupy movement and both want to get out of the hole. The problem is the Tea Party wants to dig deeper, and the Occupy movement doesn’t where to find a ladder. In “Occupy Theaters,” Dartmouth- and Stanford-trained economist David L. Smith provides the ladder, proposing a new political process to break the Big Money’s stranglehold on American Democracy, thereby reorienting government to serve the People. In this new democratic process, the current dominant political medium, television, would be replaced by Internet social media, through which large numbers of people would be persuaded to gather from time to time in a nationwide network of Internet-linked multiplex movie theaters. Multiplex theaters would become the dominant political venue, replacing the couch in front of the television in which passive, solitary voters are force-fed Big Money’s propaganda. A portion of ticket sales to these Assemblies and of food concession sales would replace Big Money as the dominant source of funding. Thus liberated from the corrupting influence of Big Money, candidates nominated and elected through the new process would serve the interests of their constituencies. Occupy Theaters represents the next logical step in political organization: local, city, county, state and, ultimately, national town meetings taking place in Internet-linked theaters at times when they would otherwise remain unused. High-tech meets high-touch -- all well within today’s technical capabilities, lacking only the vision and the popular will to make it happen. “Occupy Theaters” provides the vision; readers must supply the popular will.

Where is the love? How Language Can Reorient Us Back to Love's Purpose is a linguistic examination of the word "love" in Indo-European and African languages. This text essentially asks the question, "How does our understanding of the word love, linguistically, affect our application of the concept in our everyday lives (in intimate and communal relationships)?" We further ask, "Does this word have an African origin, and if so, are there any differences in their meanings?" How are these differences, if any, translated into experience in their respective locations? The bigger question we are asking is, "How does language shape human behavior using the concept of love as research focus?" After a successful linguistic exploration, we then identify ways in which our new found knowledge can help the African/African-American community in very practical ways. This research argues that without a proper understanding of love, no society can have a strong and healthy culture, political system, or business economy. Civilization, and even the universe itself, is built on the principle of love and in order for the African-World community to restore its harmonic wealth (intellectual, spiritual, relational, financial, and physical) it must reacquaint itself with the African concept of love.

Regulus Missile Service And Launching Instructions

The Regulus missile was a direct outgrowth of World War II. The success of Germany¿s V-1 ¿buzz bombs¿ and the awesome power of the a-bomb suggested that developing a submarine-launched, nuclear-armed guided missile was an imperitive. The Chance-Vought Aircraft Company won the contract for Regulus with a bold proposal. Their missile resembled a pilotless jet aircraft, and during the test phase was equipped with landing gear, allowing the missile to be recovered rather than expended during the tests. Regulus would be radio controlled, either by a chase aircraft or by a nearby ship or submarine, and it could carry a nuclear payload. JATO boosters enabled submarine launch of the Regulus. It would be deployed aboard five submarines. They conducted the nation¿s first nuclear deterrent patrols off the coast of the Soviet Union in 1959-1964. Originally printed by the U.S. Navy and Chance-Vought, this handbook was ¿restricted¿. It was declassified and is here reprinted in book form.
