Since the advent of recordings, musicians' lives have been enriched, but also complicated, as musical performance has been split into two activities: performing live and making a recording. But how is it that these are so radically different? Drawing on both fieldwork and various kinds of recordings, my research deals with some of the senses in which recordings of classical music are not simply live performances captured. The focus for my study are live performances and studio recordings conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, and this thesis attempts to suggest ways in which we can study these types of sources and offers an explanation of how these modes of performance might be understood. -- The two performance situations are investigated by descriptions of how they unfold, by discussing musicians' and technicians' attitudes towards them, and analyzing the differences between them. This is achieved by combining ethnographic techniques (interviews and observation) alongside more mainstream musicological approaches (source studies and recording analysis). -- After an introduction discussing what inroads have so far been made into the live versus recorded question, an account is given of the methodologies and sources used in this research. Chapter 3 presents the experiences and opinions of Sir Charles and the performers and production-team members with whom he has been working. Chapter 4 and 5 are based on fieldwork observations of various performance situations and give us a glimpse into both the recording studio and the opera house/concert hall. The following chapter then outlines the elements of performance which are subject to change; these are set under the broad headings of Sound, Expression, and Notes, and include timbre, acoustics, microphone placement, declamation and characterisation, vibrato, phrasing and articulation, volume, tempo, dramatic timing, mistakes, and editing.

These are among the first recordings of black New Orleans jazz bands made in their home city and, as the band consisted of musicians who stayed on in New Orleans after the Great Exodus to Chicago and New York in the early 1920s, the recordings preserve a purer form of the collectively improvised ensemble of the earliest black jazz bands. It is a loosely integrated, purely linear ensemble mass, a collective projecting of melodic lines close to the unassimilated heterophonic singing of the Black Primitive Baptist and Sanctified Churches. This proto jazz style was being rapidly eclipsed in the 1920s by more flamboyant and technically brilliant forms of New Orleans jazz being recorded by Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Jelly Roll Morton. The scores contained herein are the first complete transcriptions of this rare and distinctive music to appear in print.
