This book presents a discussion of problems encountered in the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). It puts emphasis on the early tasks of designing and proofing the concept of integration of technologies in Intelligent Transport Systems. In its first part the book concentrates on the design problems of urban ITS. The second part of the book features case studies representative for the different modes of transport. These are freight transport, rail transport and aerospace transport encompassing also space stations. The book provides ideas for deployment which may be developed by scientists and engineers engaged in the design of Intelligent Transport Systems. It can also be used in the training of specialists, students and post-graduate students in universities and transport high schools.

This book investigates the overall process of adoption of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in private organizations (e.g. logistics service providers and local public transport firms). Both students at undergraduate and master level and professionals from the technological sector and the logistics industry can benefit from this text. This book can be used as a strategic handbook to guide the selection and the evaluation of technological solutions for the transportation process. This text specifically addresses the following questions: What are the technologies that can be used to improve the transportation process? What are the most suitable technologies for different types of transportation (e.g. full truckload, less than truckload, intermodal transportation)? What are the tools that can be used to calculate the benefits and the return on investment of these solutions? This book is an adaptation of a PhD thesis and is part of a wider research project conducted in conjunction with the Intelligent Transportation Systems Observatory of Politecnico di Milano, which surveyed a large number of firms operating in the transport sector.

There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.

Intelligent Transportation Systems: An Energy and Environmental Perspective provides the foundation needed to understand the energy and environmental impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and develop applications that reduce the transportation network’s carbon footprint. While transportation energy sources such as hybrid-electric technologies, bio-ethanol, and hydrogen fuel cells are emerging, these alternatives have yet to replace petroleum-powered engines. Consequently, there is a need to improve the efficiency of petroleum-based travel. Intelligent Transportation Systems: An Energy and Environmental Perspective shows how current and future ITS applications will improve vehicle fuel efficiency and reduce transportation system energy consumption and CO2 emission levels. Intelligent Transportation Systems: An Energy and Environmental Perspective begins by showing how the transportation sector contributes to the energy and environmental issues the world is currently facing. The book explores three main topics: 1) vehicle longitudinal motion modelling and traffic modelling, 2) modelling network-wide vehicle fuel consumption, energy consumption, and emission levels, and 3) developing ITS environmentally-friendly applications. It examines key vehicle and traffic technologies, along with the approaches needed to model vehicle fuel consumption and emission levels. The book provides an overview of traffic flow theory and routing algorithms, examining how ITS applications can enhance vehicle energy consumption levels and reduce vehicle emissions. The book concludes with reflections on the tools needed to achieve these objectives, and directions for future research. Consolidates the latest thinking from disparate places and never-before-published information into one resource Links quantitatively transportation activities and resulting vehicle emissions Numerous application-oriented case studies throughout Free access to author created open source software to model concepts explored in the book Additional learning aids include chapter objectives and discussion questions

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are the way forward for sustainable growth of mobility at all levels (local, regional, national, transnational). The book reviews the current status of Research & Development. It includes connected (and autonomous) cars and buses, real-world large-scale field trials, data analysis and assessment of technological solutions. Standards and normative aspects in the domain of Electronic Fee Collection and Cooperative Systems oriented to probe data collection, safety and non-safety critical applications in vehicular networks, are studied. The book provides the rational, perspectives, and technical issues for the implementation of ITS solutions in a genuine inter-modal scenario, taking the example of a Mediterranean seaport, actively involved in testing and validation of ITS standards. The novelty of this book is that it covers R&D, standards, and pilots, all under one cover. Rather than stressing the novelty in ICT, the authors have presented the need for system-level integration, assessment of existing (standard) solutions, and piloting experiments in real-world industrial scenarios.

This book focuses on emerging technologies in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) namely efficient information dissemination between vehicles, infrastructures, pedestrians and public transportation systems. It covers the state-of-the-art of Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), with centralized and decentralized (Peer-to-Peer) communication architectures, considering several application scenarios. With a detailed treatment of emerging communication paradigms, including cross networking and distributed algorithms. Unlike most of the existing books, this book presents a multi-layer overview of information dissemination systems, from lower layers (MAC) to high layers (applications). All those aspects are investigated considering the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones/tablets and embedded systems, i.e. technologies that during last years completely changed the current market, the user expectations, and communication networks. The presented networking paradigms are supported and validated by means of extensive simulative analysis and real field deployments in different application scenarios. This book represents a reference for professional technologist, postgraduates and researchers in the area of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), wireless communication and distributed systems.

For many transportation systems, the cost of expanding the infrastructure is too high. Therefore, the focus must shift to improving the quality of transportation within the existing infrastructure. The second edition of a bestseller, Intelligent Transport Systems: Smart and Green Infrastructure Design critically examines the successes and failures of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) during the course of the past decade. The new subtitle reflects this edition’s focus on meta-principles critical to moving ahead and successfully building ITS infrastructures that take advantage of smart/green technologies. The book identifies challenging problems that must be addressed in order to bring real quality of life improvements and positively impact our environmental and civil infrastructure systems. New in the second edition: Coverage of new, efficient green strategies Critical review of important developments and implementation of ITS Discussion of how to apply new insights and meta-principles to real-world ITS problems The authors argue strongly for the need to incorporate innovative and creative approaches to transportation problems, based on the fundamental principles and thorough scientific validation. They stress the need for computer modeling and simulation of a representative system to help design and validate such complex, large-scale systems, and the design of new performance metrics to estimate the performance of these systems. They provide a radically different approach to transportation systems design—one that closely resembles reality and promises to yield an architecture that delivers the highest efficiency.
