Over the past several decades, research has indicated that when parents are involved in their childs academic endeavors, their children are more likely to succeed in school. However, these findings are not congruent with the perceptions of every parent. For example, several parents reported that as their children become older, their level of involvement should decrease, while other parents felt as if their non-involvement will not have an effect either way on their childs academic performance. The focus of this study was to investigate the ways college students perceived their parents involvement. Particularly, the overall objective of the study was to measure differences between groups based on the participants gender, grade point average, age, classification level, their parents income level and educational attainment. For this study, a survey design was employed to collect data. Two-hundred two (n=202) community college students participated in two empirical studies. The Parental Involvement Assessment (PIA), formulated by the researcher specifically for this study, was used to gather the data. In the preliminary study, Cronbachs Alpha on the instrument was found to be 0.819. Several ANOVAs were performed in order to determine the differences between groups on a number of measures. The results of this research indicated that parental involvement contributes to community college student success, regardless of gender. In addition, parents with higher income levels were more likely to be involved. Additionally, students who were not aware of their GPA indicated that they would know their GPA if their parents were involved. Last, amid other results, findings indicated that students with higher GPAs were more likely to be rewarded for grades, were more likely to be encouraged by their parents, and were more satisfied with the level of parental involvement. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed. Key words: parental involvement, academic achieveme.

The author studied the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement in language arts and math and the extent to which parental involvement helps predict language arts and math achievement among elementary school students. In a quantitative, non-experimental study using a descriptive, correlational research design with multiple linear regression analysis, she found a significant relationship between achievement in language arts and mathematics and parental efficacy. The study population was comprised of parents of 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students in 3 elementary schools in a working-class urban New Jersey school district diverse in ethnicity and language and high in poverty. She found significant relationships between parenting skills and parental efficacy and student achievement in language arts and mathematics. As parenting skills and parental efficacy increased, the level of student achievement in both subject areas also increased. Social networking was also found to correlate with higher student achievement.

Literature findings support the conclusion that parent involvement is an important factor in student achievement and while parent involvement is associated with increased student success, parent education and SES level and ethnicity/race is less associated with this student success. These factors may serve as moderating variables related to parent involvement. The purpose of the study was to determine why some parents do not get involved in their children's education. Specifically, findings demonstrated whether family structure, race/ethnicity, education level, gender, or perceptions of involvement are related to levels of parent involvement. Quantitative and qualitative questionnaires were used to survey parents about their level of involvement in their child's education. Findings were that: parent race/ethnicity, parent education level, parent SES, and parent perceptions of involvement, were all significantly related to parental involvement; and perceptions of involvement, SES, parent education, and relationship with student (biological mother or father) significantly predict parental involvement.

This quantitative study investigated the relationships between college aspirations and achievement motivation in Dominican high school students including how parental involvement potentially mediates the relationship between college aspirations and achievement motivation. The researcher sought to answer the following research questions: (1) What is the level of parental involvement for Dominican high school students in New York City? (2) What forms of parental involvement most invluence student motivation for Dominican high school students in New York City? (3) What is the impact of parental involvement on student success when the following three variables are considered: (a) the effort children put into school-related tasks. (b) the motivation of children to learn the topics covered in class. (c) the work children independently spend on learning activities at home. (4) What are the barriers for Dominican parents becoming involved with their child's school? (5) What the parent's perceptions of the overall climate of their child's school? (6) What do parents feel is primarily responsible for their child's success? Parental involvement was defined as parents who were academically involved, were motivated to support their children and were present and qactive at school events. Participants of the study were Dominican parents of students from four high schools in the Bronx and Manhattan. Data from participants were collected through a Likert-type survey. The survey results indicated that the majority of respondents believe that there are many barriers keeping them from being active in their child's education. Many of the parents surveyed, felt they were actively involved in their child's education, regardless of the fact that they were not present at the school functions. Parents felt that their parental involvement came through interaction with their child out of school, about their school progress. The results also indicate that parents who put an emphasis on the work children do at thome, the effort children put into school-related tasks, adn the motivation children have to learn what being taught in class; are the types of parents who have most positive impact on student success.
