**Named one of the best books of 2015 by The Economist** Private Markets, Fashion Trends, Prison Camps, Dissenters and Defectors. North Korea is one of the most troubled societies on earth. The country's 24 million people live under a violent dictatorship led by a single family, which relentlessly pursues the development of nuclear arms, which periodically incites risky military clashes with the larger, richer, liberal South, and which forces each and every person to play a role in the "theater state" even as it pays little more than lip service to the wellbeing of the overwhelming majority. With this deeply anachronistic system eventually failed in the 1990s, it triggered a famine that decimated the countryside and obliterated the lives of many hundreds of thousands of people. However, it also changed life forever for those who survived. A lawless form of marketization came to replace the iron rice bowl of work in state companies, and the Orwellian mind control of the Korean Workers' Party was replaced for many by dreams of trade and profit. A new North Korea Society was born from the horrors of the era—one that is more susceptible to outside information than ever before with the advent of k-pop and video-carrying USB sticks. This is the North Korean society that is described in this book. In seven fascinating chapters, the authors explore what life is actually like in modern North Korea today for the ordinary "man and woman on the street." They interview experts and tap a broad variety of sources to bring a startling new insider's view of North Korean society—from members of Pyongyang's ruling families to defectors from different periods and regions, to diplomats and NGOs with years of experience in the country, to cross-border traders from neighboring China, and textual accounts appearing in English, Korean and Chinese sources. The resulting stories reveal the horror as well as the innovation and humor which abound in this fascinating country.

Bloodlands Black Earth

Bloodlands + Black Earth: Red Flags as History and Warning. Stalin, Mao, & Hitler - their blood red flags and black hearts caused the deaths of millions. There was a conspiracy shared by all three of them and by many others worldwide. They were aided by ideological comrades in the USA. Their comrades continue to cover up their deadly dogma today. Top historical discoveries of the century are revealed in this book, including: (1) Congress and the Flag Code confirm that the military salute was the origin of the Nazi salute. (2) The USA's Pledge of Allegiance inspired Nazi rituals. (3) Public schools spread Nazi behavior. (4) Swastikas represented crossed "S" letter shapes for "socialist" under Hitler. The above scholarly achievements are from astounding academic work by the historian Dr. Rex Curry. Verified! The U.S. Congress confirms that the remarkable research is correct. Learn how flag laws are written to hide America's scary past, present, and future. Fact checked! The startling news exposes the origins of the police state and how to fight it. Save yourself from the cult of the omnipotent state! The de-programming guide is right here. This blockbuster debunks parts of Timothy Snyder's books "Bloodlands" and "Black Earth." EXPOSED: what the "+" symbol means on the front cover in the title "Bloodlands + Black Earth"! Author Ian Tinny relied on research by Dr. Curry, including these astonishing discoveries: (1) that the "Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag" was the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior; (2) that the military salute was the origin of the Nazi salute (via the military salute's use in the original Pledge of Allegiance) and; (3) Swastikas represented crossed "S" letter shapes for "socialist" under Hitler. Research for Dr. Curry's distinguished accomplishments was painstaking and difficult, but fortunately grad students are plentiful and cheap. The government calls America's beloved VexilLOLogist (Dr. Curry) "the man who knows too much." Anyone who doubts that Hitler used the swastika to represent "S" letter shapes for "Socialism" is someone who believes Hitler was blind and that Hitler remained blind throughout the decades that Hitler used the symbol for his National Socialist Party. Eventually, Dr. Curry's discovery about the swastika will become so well-known and so obvious that no one will believe that Dr. Curry "made the discovery that Hitler used the swastika to represent 'S' letter shapes for 'socialism'" because no one will believe that there ever was a time when people could not see that Dr. Curry's assertion was self-evident. People will not believe that there ever was a time when the world did not see the glaring truth. People of the future will not believe that people of today were so blind and ignorant. It will be Dr. Curry's revolutionary paradigm shift. The same path of doubt, dissemination, and eventual widespread acceptance and paradigm shift will occur regarding Dr. Curry's discovery that the Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the Nazi salute and Nazi behavior. "There is rumor of a Pulitzer Prize for exposing the Pledge of Allegiance as the origin of Nazi salutes and Nazi behavior; and the swastika as alphabetical 'S' letter shaped symbolism for 'socialist.' Hooray!" - R. Yates Bloodsworth "The professor's work left us speechless!" - Tampa Tribune Newspaper "This book will make you wonder if anything you know is true." - Dead Writers Club The Dead Writers Club also fights media incompetency and dishonesty; toward that goal it joined with the Pointer Institute to shut down the Tampa Tribune Newspaper in 2016. The author Ian Tinny's work (with the assistance of the Pointer Institute) led to the arrest, trial, conviction, and imprisonment of America's Dumbest Criminals (and the foreclosure of their homes, along with victim restitution liens, and criminal forfeiture judgments, in amounts totaling millions of dollars).

Nuclear Disarmament And Non Proliferation

It has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 3.0 license and is part of the OAPEN-UK research project. This book examines the current debate on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, notably the international non-proliferation regime and how to implement its disarmament provisions. Discussing the requirements of a new international consensus on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, this book builds on the three pillars of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT): non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. It reviews the impact of Cold War and post-Cold War policies on current disarmament initiatives and analyses contemporary proliferation problems: how to deal with the states that never joined the NPT (India, Pakistan and Israel); how states that have been moving toward nuclear weapons have been brought back to non-nuclear-weapon status; and, in particular, how to deal with Iran and North Korea. The analysis centres on the relationship between disarmament and non-proliferation in an increasingly multi-centric world involving China and India as well as the US, the European powers and Russia. It concludes with a description and discussion of three different worlds without nuclear weapons and their implications for nuclear disarmament policies. This book will be of great interest to all students of arms control, strategic studies, war and conflict studies, and IR/security studies in general Sverre Lodgaard is a Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, Oslo

North Korea And The Science Of Provocation

Why does North Korea routinely turn to provocation to achieve foreign policy goals? Are the actions of the volatile Kim regime predictable, based on logical responses to the conditions faced by North Korea? This book, an examination of the “Hermit Kingdom” over the past 50 years, explains why the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea uses hostility and coercion as instruments of foreign policy. Using three case studies and quantitative analysis of more than 2,000 conflict events, the author explores the relationship between North Korea’s societal conditions and its propensity for external conflict. These findings are considered in light of diversionary theory, the idea that leaders use external conflict to divert attention from domestic affairs. Analyzing the actions of an isolated state such as North Korea provides a template for conflict scholarship in general.

"Mr. Russell's book is the first by a non-Korean to explain the rise of Korea's entertainment industries....the book could hardly be more approachable."—Wall Street Journal “For a country that traditionally received culture, especially from China but also from Japan and the United States, South Korea finds itself at a turning point in its new role as exporter.”—The New York Times From kim chee to kim chic! South Korea came from nowhere in the 1990s to become one of the biggest producers of pop content (movies, music, comic books, TV dramas, online gaming) in Asia—and the West. Why? Who’s behind it? Mark James Russell tells an exciting tale of rapid growth and wild success marked by an uncanny knack for moving just one step ahead of changing technologies (such as music downloads and Internet comics) that have created new consumer markets around the world. Among the media pioneers profiled in this book is film director Kang Je-gyu, maker of Korea’s first blockbuster film Shiri; Lee Su-man, who went from folk singer to computer programmer to creator of Korea’s biggest music label; and Nelson Shin, who rose from North Korea to the top of the animation business. Full of fresh analysis, engaging reportage, and insightful insider anecdotes, Pop Goes Korea explores the hallyu (the Korean Wave) hitting the world’s shores in the new century. Mark James Russell has been living in Korea since 1996. His articles about Korean and Asian cultures have appeared in Newsweek, The New York Times, International Herald-Tribune, and many other publications. He is currently the Korea/Japan Bureau Chief for Asian Movie Week magazine.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 51. Chapters: Axe murder incident, Communism in Korea, Death and funeral of Kim Il-sung, Death and funeral of Kim Jong-il, Division of Korea, Down-With-Imperialism Union, General Order No. 1, Grand People's Study House, Hanvoice, List of North Korean defectors in South Korea, Lod Airport massacre, North Korean famine, North Korean Human Rights Act of 2004, Pong Su incident, Rangoon bombing, Ryanggang explosion, United Nations Security Council Resolution 702, USS Pueblo (AGER-2), Yanan faction. Excerpt: The death of Kim Jong-il was reported by North Korean state television news on 19 December 2011. The presenter, Ri Chun-hee, announced that he had died on 17 December at 8:30 am of a massive heart attack while traveling by train to an area outside Pyongyang. Reportedly, he had received medical treatment for "cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases." During the trip, though, he was said to have had an "advanced acute myocardial infarction, complicated with a serious heart shock." It was reported in December 2012, however, that he had died "in a fit of rage" over construction faults at a crucial power plant project. His son, Kim Jong-un, was announced as North Korea's next leader with the title of "The Great Successor" during the same newscast. Kim Jong-il's funeral was held on 28 December in Pyongyang, with a mourning period lasting until the following day. North Korean State media did not report his death until 51 hours after it occurred, ostensibly due to the political jockeying and discussions that surrounded the official version of Jong-il's legacy, as well as agreeing upon the membership of the Funeral Committee of Kim Jong-Il. On the morning of 19 December, all work units, schools, government agencies, and military personnel were informed of a 'major announcement' to take place at noon. At noon, Ri Chun-hee, a Korean Central...
