The coverage extends beyond the American tradition to include the experiences of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The book opens with chapters drawing insights from various social science approaches. The following sections examine fundamental issues concerning the external triggers, factors and conditions, agents, and processes of organizational learning. Subsequent chapters review the subject within a global context, looking in particular at processes of interorganizational learning and knowledge transfer. The next sections examine the development of learning practices and provide case studies to illustrate organizational learning and knowledge creation. The book concludes with an analysis of the state of the art and an agenda for the future. Cross-cultural knowledge management, an elusive yet consequential phenomenon, is becoming an increasingly essential factor in organizational practice and policy in the era of globalization. In order to overcome culturally shaped blind spots in conducting research in different settings, this volume highlights how the structuring of roles, interests, and power among different organizational elements, such as teams, departments, and management hierarchies (each comprised of members from different intellectual and professional backgrounds), generates various paradoxes and tensions that bring into play a set of dynamics that have an impact on learning processes. In this context, such questions often arise: How is knowledge shared in the multicultural organization? What problems and issues emerge? How do different mentalities affect people’s responses to new knowledge and new ideas? How can knowledge-sharing processes be improved? Under which conditions do ideas generated by units or groups of different cultural traditions have a chance of being heard and implemented? Such questions translate into an investigation of potential managerial dilemmas that occur when different but equally valid choices create tensions in decision making. The authors draw from experiences working with a wide variety of organizations, and insights from such fields as sociology and psychology, to shed new light on the dynamics of knowledge management in the multicultural enterprise. In so doing, they help to identify both obstacles to successful communication and opportunities to inspire creativity and foster collaboration. The authors note that in order to enable organizations to transfer knowledge effectively, mechanisms for dispute settlement, mediation of cultural conflict, and enforcing agreements need to be in place.

Fairness And Division Of Labor In Market Societies

Contrary to the explanations offered by the theory of non-reflexive, path-dependent institutionalism, the U.S. and the German automotive industries undertook strikingly similar patterns of industry modification under tough international competition during the 1990s, departing from their traditional national patterns. By investigating the processes of the U.S. and German adjustments, the author critically reconsiders the prevalent paradigms of political economy and comes to the conclusion that the evidence does not confirm the neoliberal paradigm. In order to better account for the recomposition of new market relations, which the author terms "converging but non-liberal" and "diverging but not predetermined" markets, he proposes an alternative model of "politics among reflexive agents," emphasizing different kinds of problem-solving practices among those reflexive agents. He argues that different forms and regimes of market are established in the process of recomposition, in which agents reflect upon not only market rationality but also upon their own institutions, creating new norms. Hyeong-Ki Kwonreceived his PhD in Political Science from the University of Chicago. Currently he is a Principal Researcher in the Institute of Korean Political Studies and Lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Seoul National University, Korea. His research interests focus on democratic governance of industrial societies, particularly on the creation of new norms and the division of labor in the process of indusrial adjustments in advanced industrial countries, especially in the U.S., Germany, and Japan.
