Seven years have elapsed since Dr. Renee Ford, editor-in-chief of Materials Technology, first suggested to me to publish a book on Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). She said that the FGM concept, then largely unknown outside of Japan and a relatively few laboratories elsewhere, would be of great interest to everyone working in the materials field because of its potentially universal applicability. There was no book about FGMs in English at that time, although the number of research papers, review articles, and FGM conference proceedings had been increasing yearly. We discussed what the book should cover, and decided it should present a comprehensive description from basic theory to the most recent applications of FGMs. This would make it useful both as an introduction to FGMs for those simply curious about what this new materials field was all about, and also as a textbook for researchers, engineers, and graduate students in various material fields. Put a New Class of Structural Composites to Use Real Solutions for Predicting Load Initially designed as thermal barrier materials for aerospace applications and fusion reactors, functionally graded materials (FGMs) are now widely employed as structural components in extremely high-temperature environments. However, little information is commonly available that would allow engineers to predict the response of FGM plates and shells subjected to thermal and mechanical loads. Functionally Graded Materials: Nonlinear Analysis of Plates and Shells is the first book devoted to the geometrically nonlinear response of inhomogeneous isotropic and functionally graded plates and shells. Concerned that the high loads common to many structures may result in nonlinear load–deflection relationships due to large deformations, author Hui-Shen Shen has been conducting investigations since 2001, paying particular attention to the nonlinear response of these plates and shells to nonlinear bending, postbuckling and nonlinear vibration. I am honored to chair this International Workshop on Functionally st Graded Materials in the 21 Century: A Workshop on Trends and Forecasts, and would like to first express my sincere gratitude to everyone participating. The Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and the Japan International Science and Technology Exchange Center (JISTEC) have co-organized this workshop with the sponsorship of the Science and Technology Agency of Japan and the cooperation of the Association of Mechanical Technology. This workshop is an international conference to focus on functionally graded materials and the aim is to provide an overview of the present global technical trends and the future development of functionally graded materials over the next 10 years. I am very happy to see many researchers meeting together here - including seven researchers invited from abroad. During the three-day oral sessions, 36 research reports will be presented, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who is very anxious to hear and participate in the upcoming interesting discussions. At present, the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory is conducting fundamental and ground-breaking research in such major areas as materials science and technology, bioengineering, information & system science, advanced machine technology, energy technology, manufacturing technology and robotics. In particular, we consider research on materials science and technology to have the highest priority for the 21st century. and since 1996 have participated in the US-Japan joint research project, Precompetitive Processing and Characterization of Functionally Graded Materials.

A feasibility study of a relatively simple and economical method for producing functionally graded thermal barrier coatings using the Wet Powder (Slurry) and Sintering method showed promising results. This method is relatively undeveloped and under utilised compared to more expensive techniques such as chemical vapour deposition, physical vapour deposition, plasma spraying and powder metallurgy. It utilizes a pressurized spray gun to spray a slurry mixture of the powdered coating material suspended in a liquid solution directly onto a substrate surface followed by sintering using an oxyacetylene torch. The effects of slurry composition, type of ceramic powder, compatibility with substrates, spraying and sintering conditions were studied. Several TBC specimens have been fabricated under various conditions to develop a procedure which produce good quality coatings (of up to 3 layers) with little or no spallation. The optimum time, heat flux and applied pressure level for sintering were deduced. TBCs produced from a 40-45% ceramic, 4% binder and 0.4% dispersant composition and sintered for 30 minutes with an applied pressure of 30 MPa produced good quality coatings with a uniform and very smooth surface. Scanning electron micrographs of the fabricated TBC coatings showed good contact between the grain boundaries of the ceramic powder. In phase 2 of this project, the Wet Powder and Sintering method will be further developed. Improvements to this method include automating the sintering procedure and optimizing the fabrication conditions. A much more extensive micromechanical testing program will be conducted to obtain a more qualitative measure of the quality of the FGM thermal barrier coatings and to develop high temperature constitutive models for input into the FE modeling.
