This collection explores artistic representations of vegetal life that imperil human life, voicing anxieties about our relationship to other life forms with which we share the earth. From medieval manuscript illustrations to modern works of science fiction and horror, plants that manifest monstrous agency defy human control, challenge anthropocentric perception, and exact a violent vengeance for our blind and exploitative practices. Plant Horror explores how depictions of monster plants reveal concerns about the viability of our prevailing belief systems and dominant ideologies— as well as a deep-seated fear about human vulnerability in an era of deepening ecological crisis. Films discussed include The Day of the Triffids, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Wicker Man, Swamp Thing, and The Happening.

Nation Space In Enlightenment Britain

Nation-Space in Enlightenment Britain: An Archaeology of Empire is a provocative intervention that extends considerably the parameters of on-going dialogues about British identity during the Enlightenment. Thoughtfully interdisciplinary and with an allegiance to the culture which literary production engenders, this book describes how British identity emerges not despite of but due to its fluid, volatile, and subversive impulses and expressions. The imperial establishment—codified in the logics of the corporation, the academy, the cathedral, the theater, as well the private parlor or garden—derives its power and sustainability from scripting and then championing a solid resistance to precisely those subversive elements which threaten or undermine the foundations of order and liberalism in civil society. Choudhury argues that imperial Britain can best be understood in terms of this culture’s investment in spatial alignments which celebrated a radial interface with remote points of commercial interest. The volume contends Daniel Defoe, Arthur Onslow, David Garrick, Joseph Banks, Daniel Solander, Hans Sloane, Francis Barber, Samuel Johnson, Charles Burney, George Frideric Handel were not merely part of a dazzling line-up of the architects of empire. In retrospect, their contributions and various engagements reflect remarkably modern patterns of the corporatization of culture and this culture’s dependence on, and thus its collusion with, commerce.

Millions of people visit our national parks each year, and some never leave. Meet the biologist who came to know and understand Six, Yellowstone’s charismatic and temperamental elk. See iconic landscapes through the eyes of bed makers, bridge builders, rangers, and wranglers. Rip through rapids, disappear inside canyons, and witness personal transformations from petrified forests to permafrost. Learn what it’s like to ditch the mainstream and make a life in our nation’s best idea. The common thread among the 20 essayists who appear in this collection are that they have lived or worked in a national park, some year-round in extreme and beautiful surroundings, while others are vagabonds, addicted to the thrill of a new park, a new season. Their stories are unique, distinct, and compelling. Editor Kim Wyatt is the founder and publisher of Bona Fide Books; she has a decade of nonfiction editing experience, and also worked in Yosemite National Park for 10 years.

Celebrities and movie stars around the world die from different types of causes, among them diseases (the subject of Volume 1 of this 3 Volume series), cancers (Vol. 2, due out in March 2014), and other causes (Vol. 3: accidents [skiing, car crashes, plane crashes, fire, and drowning], murders, overdoses, and suicides – all found Bible-encoded with their names; due in April 2014). These are searched for, with the victims’ names, using a Bible Code program, and surprisingly all are found encoded, in the Torah, the Hebrew Bible. In this Vol. 1, deadly diseases of various specific kinds are found, along with the names of the celebrities and movie stars who died from them, all in the same Matrix (search result for the Key word, “malignancy”). An attempt is made to put the Bible Code mystery in the context of meaning, in the book’s Conclusion. Bible Code applications and method are explained in the Preface, Introduction, and Addendum 1. In memoriam for the departed, two original poems by the author are shown in the Epilogue; his poems have appeared in literary journals in 5 countries over 40 years and with at least one Nobel Prize winner for literature (Pablo Neruda, in The Paris Review).
