Motores. Estructura de la aeronave. Comportamiento de la aeronave en vuelo. Los instrumentos del avión. Meteorolog¡a.

The rate of change in the field of avionics is so fast that even the legislators are struggling to keep up with it. With new digital cockpits, it is getting to the stage that, if your VCR still flashes 12:00, you will have no business flying a modern helicopter! The majority of twin-engined (and many single-engined) aircraft now have complex autopilots, glass cockpits and navigation equipment, possibly including Flight Management Systems (FMS). This book originated with a request from the RCAF for training materials for engineers, but curious pilots whose training syllabus did not include avionics, and who would like to know a little more will find it useful as well.

This book is a single source, concise presentation of what pilots should know about basic aircraft systems. The content reflects the author's more than thirty-five years experience of flying and fourteen years of teaching Aircraft Systems to university students. Aircraft Systems for Pilots includes a brief study of the fundamentals of physical matter (from which airplanes are made) and mechanics (how airplane parts act and react). The author provides sufficient study of each type of system to allow the professional pilot to stay abreast of the critical learning which must occur as the pilot advances into management of more complex aircraft. Subject covered include physics, aircraft engine types and construction, reciprocating engine theory of operation, engine lubrication and cooling, propellers and governors, fuels and fuel systems, power management, supercharging and turbocharging, pressurization and high altitude operations, electrical principles, electrical components, aircraft electrical systems, hydraulic systems and landing gear, pneumatic and deicing systems, aircraft structures and flight controls, weight and balance, inspections, pilot maintenance, and aircraft instrument systems. Illustrated throughout, study questions conclude each chapter and includes index. In print for more than 30 years and continually updated through the years, this 4th Edition continues to serve as the comprehensive college textbook for pilots learning aircraft systems.

Finding Carla

"In March of 1967, single-engine private pilot Alvin Oien, Sr. crashed his Cessna 195 in the mountains of Northern California, with passengers Phyllis (his wife) and Carla (his stepdaughter) after he hit unexpectedly worsening weather with fast ice-buildup on his wings. They all survived the crash due to Al's skillful and lucky handling but the icing caused him to spin out of control and fly far off course. He hard-landed near the summit of a remote mountain peak and the three of them were badly injured. Before 1968, there was no thought of any requirement for airplanes to contain emergency locator transmitters. Because of the multiple negative factors of the blizzard conditions, incredibly rough terrain and zero visibility, the search and rescue efforts failed as there was no 'ELT' onboard to pinpoint them. The ELT Beacon law, finally signed into the regulations in 1970 as a rider to the OSHA bill, could well be called Carla's Law. When the details of the 'Carla Corbus accident'--the story told in this book--made headline news when they were finally found 6 months later, along with a 'diary' that Phyllis and Carla kept (which was transcribed in part and published months after that), it was the shock that broke all political resistance to making such a law. This is a flying story as well as a life story. In retelling it, the hope is that the messages of this book spread through the aviation world and beyond, cause people to think about what is important in flying and life. The Oien Family's sacrifice in this needs to be remembered...in this story"--Provided by publisher.
