The world long awaited the arrival of the Messiah, and the prophecy intimated that he would appear in Egypt. But how long would he stay? Where would he go? This remarkable book retraces the footsteps of the Holy Family in Egypt as they fled the decree of Herod ordering the slaughter of all male infants under the age of two. Since the Gospels give scant information on the Family's time in Egypt, the experts assembled here have had to resort to a little detective work: examining the Coptic sources and the rich culture the Copts have had as one of the first Christian communities in the world and the primary denomination in Egypt; combing through all the ancient references and testimonials in libraries around the world; and walking Egypt from end to end, collecting local traditions and sharing in pilgrimage festivals throughout the country. Each expert reports his findings here in a refined yet engaging way. More than 100 full-color photographs vividly demonstrate that the spirit of the Holy Family remains alive in the land where Jesus took his first earthly steps - in solitary groves, desert retreats, and urban sites where churches now attest to their sacred character, in jewel-encrusted icons that candidly reveal the mercy of Jesus, and in the worshipful regard of celebrants, congregants, monks, and pilgrims.

When the Holy Family fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod Antipas, they journeyed for three years throughout Egypt, mainly along the Nile, to keep Herod’s agents at bay. Using an ancient 4th century text written by Patriarch Theophilus of Alexandria as his guide, Cowan takes the reader on a fascinating journey through modern-day Egypt in the footsteps of the Holy Family, about the Delta region and up the Nile to a place called Mount Qussqam, where Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus resided for six months. The itinerary, according to Coptic tradition, was revealed to Theophilus in a dream. Documenting his journey, Cowan finds himself in the midst of a spiritual revolution going on in Egypt itself. He meets with monks and health workers, desert mystics and visionaries, all of whom have a stake in the story of the Holy Family’s journey, as they know it. Through their eyes the reader is drawn into a dramatic story of escape and miraculous interventions.

The traditions of the Sicilians and Italians have been present in Detroit and Holy Family Church since the early 1900s. The church being the very root of their soul, they have maintained their ancestors’ culture and the rituals they brought with them over 100 years ago. Some of these customs date back hundreds of years in their homelands of Cinisi, Terrasini, Trapani, and many other cities. Bonnie Leone was born, raised, and still resides in Detroit. Originally appointed by Gov. John Engler to the position of Wayne County jury commissioner, Leone is a member of several genealogical societies, tracing some of her ancestors as far back as the 1500s. Her strong sense of history, art, and tradition brought her to this church, so that she may help to preserve and protect the traditions of the last 100 years of the Sicilians in Detroit.

To travel to Jerusalem or other places where the events of the Bible and life of Jesus took place, is not merely like any other trip. A Christian literally receives grace, and becomes closer to God as a result. This book is a type of "adventure narrative" or spiritual odyssey: a firsthand report of what it felt like for our party of five as we traveled to all these holy sites in Israel. I will also be detailing some of the exciting archaeological discoveries that have been occurring in Israel and Jordan, and almost literally revolutionizing the field of biblical archaeology, and utilizing scriptural references to relate the places we visit to biblical history; along with the occasional exposition of the text. My hope is that a lively sense of the pilgrimage can be directly conveyed to the reader. For those, particularly who may never be able to visit the Holy Land, the goal is to make our pilgrimage come alive for you: so that you can experience something of what we felt.
