Ken Follett and the intrigue of World War II—"a winning formula" (Entertainment Weekly) if ever there was one. With his riveting prose and unerring instinct for suspense, the #1 New York Times bestselling author takes to the skies over Europe during the early days of the war in a most extraordinary novel. . . . It is June 1941, and the war is not going well for England. Somehow, the Germans are anticipating the RAF's flight paths and shooting down British bombers with impunity. Meanwhile, across the North Sea, eighteen-year-old Harald Olufsen takes a shortcut on the German-occupied Danish island of Sande and discovers an astonishing sight. He doesn't know what it is, but he knows he must tell someone. And when he learns the truth, it will fall upon him to deliver word to England—except that he has no way to get there. He has only an old derelict Hornet Moth biplane rusting away in a ruined church—a plane so decrepit that it is unlikely to ever get off the ground . . . even if Harald knew how to fly it. Look out for Ken's newest book, A Column of Fire, available now.

“In 1963...there was no way I could have known, sitting in a classroom on that beautiful campus in Ohio, that by raising my hand I would be going to war in Vietnam and that I would see things, hear things and do things that most people cannot imagine.”—James Joyce. The author was drawn into the United States Army through ROTC, and went through training to fly helicopters in combat over Vietnam. His experiences are notable because he flew both Huey “Slicks” and Huey “Gunships”: the former on defense as he flew troops into battle, and the latter on offense as he took the battle to the enemy. Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to his and other pilots’ day-to-day lives—such as the smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname given to a United States Army–sponsored compound for prostitution. Some of the pilots Joyce served with survived the war and went on to have careers with commercial airlines, and many were killed.

The first book devoted solely to the subject of landing a helicopter without engine power. It covers the basics, as seen from the cockpit of the helicopter, and is written from the pilot's perspective. It covers the subject for both the student helicopter pilot and the helicopter flight instructor. Training exercises are developed, starting from the very beginning through to how to adjust the flight path to arrive at a particular spot. The Height-Velocity curve and it's development are covered. There are few formulae, and many diagrams. The text has been developed from the author's experience teaching autorotations at a major manufacturer's training school as well teaching student test pilots about the height-velocity diagram while instructing at three different test pilot schools. It is also based on his experience as an engineering test pilot at Transport Canada.
