"General Sir Guy Carleton, First Baron Dorchester, was one of Great Britain's most important imperial servants in the latter half of the eighteenth century, playing a decisive part in the early history of British Canada. From 1759 to 1796, he served both as a soldier and a Royal governor in Canada, helping to mold that province's future in government and on the battlefield. He was with General James Wolfe at Quebec in 1759, and seven years later was appointed governor of the newly acquired British territory. He helped to shape the Quebec Act of 1774, and was on duty in Quebec when the American Revolutionary War commenced in 1775." "In 1782, he was appointed commander in chief of the British Army in America. He effected the British withdrawal from the United States in 1783. Three years later, after being elevated to the peerage as Baron Dorchester, Carleton reassumed the governorship of Canada. He implemented policies of defense against encroachments by American General Anthony Wayne in 1793-94, and in the latter year set in motion British withdrawals from America's Northwest Territory. In the process, he lost the confidence of his superiors in London; thus he resigned the governorship in 1796 and returned home for the final time. He lived for more than a decade in comfort on his extensive English estates, but his last years were marred by the deaths of many of his children." "Nelson attempts in this biography to settle controversial issues about Carleton's life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

How are you going to snag one if you don't know how to....Think Like a Guy? E! News anchor Giuliana DePandi knows that if you want a little piece of his heart, you're going to have to learn to get into his head--and she shares her knowledge as an on-the-town dater in L.A. into this funny but oh-so-practical and effective volume. DePandi knows what it's like "out there", and has done extensive field work to learn what turns guys off...and on. Here's a pop quiz: Should you ...mention your mom on a first date? ...cook a guy breakfast after your first sleepover at his place? ...pick at your food when he takes you to dinner? ...tell him how many lovers you've had before he came along? ...leave him long voicemails if you can't reach him on the phone? The resounding answer to all the questions above, according to DePandi, is: NO! You should, in fact, be busy and breezy, offer to pay for dinner, leave short voicemails (and none at all if you don't have anything concrete to say), stay well-dressed and -groomed, and make your guy feel like he's the first to introduce you to anything kinky in bed. Think Like a Guy is a hard-headed practical book for women who acknowledge that men and women simply think differently.

Alice Guy BlachT (1873-1968), the world's first woman filmmaker, was one of the key figures in the development of narrative film. From 1896 to 1920 she directed 400 films (including over 100 synchronized sound films), produced hundreds more, and was the first--and so far the only--woman to own and run her own studio plant (The Solax Studio in Fort Lee, NJ, 1910-1914). However, her role in film history was completely forgotten until her own memoirs were published in 1976. This new book tells her life story and fills in many gaps left by the memoirs. Guy BlachT's life and career mirrored momentous changes in the film industry, and the long time-span and sheer volume of her output makes her films a fertile territory for the application of new theories of cinema history, the development of film narrative, and feminist film theory. The book provides a close analysis of the one hundred Guy BlachT films that survive, and in the process rewrites early cinema history.

With its hilariously honest look at the single male in America — from his apartment furnishings to his career struggles to his dating habits — Bruce Jay Friedman's book The Lonely Guy's Book of Life quickly became a hit when it first appeared in 1978, winning raves from critics and inspiring Steve Martin's classic cult comedy The Lonely Guy. Twenty years later, Friedman returned to the subject with The Slightly Older Guy, finding his quarry no longer alone and not so young anymore, but just as funny. Now these classic humor books are available together for the first time in a single paperback edition from Grove Press. With a new afterword about The Considerably Older Guy, this edition deals with such topics as divorce and grandchildren. Offering advice on exercise (walk, don't run) and insomnia (read Solzhenitsyn), Friedman took the pulse of the aging American male — and found him still in need of some good satire.
