Family and Civilization is the magnum opus of Carle Zimmerman, a distinguished sociologist who taught for many years at Harvard University. In this unjustly forgotten work Zimmerman demonstrates the close and causal connections between the rise and fall of different types of families and the rise and fall of civilizations, particularly ancient Greece and Rome, medieval and modern Europe, and the United States. Zimmerman traces the evolution of family structure from tribes and clans to extended and large nuclear families to the small nuclear families and broken families of today. And he shows the consequences of each structure for the bearing and rearing of children; for religion, law, and everyday life; and for the fate of civilization itself. Originally published in 1947, this compelling analysis predicted many of today’s cultural and social controversies and trends, including youth violence and depression, abortion and homosexuality, the demographic collapse of Europe and of the West more generally, and the displacement of peoples. This new edition, part of ISI Books’ Background series, has been edited and abridged by cultural commentator James Kurth of Swarthmore College and includes essays on the text by Kurth, Allan Carlson, and Bryce Christensen.

Drawing on comprehensive analyses of all of Sophocles' plays, on structuralist anthropology, and on other extensive work on myth and tragedy, Charles Segal examines Sophocles both as a great dramatic poet and as a serious thinker. He shows how Sophoclean tragedy reflects the human condition in its constant and tragic struggle for order and civilized life against the ever-present threat of savagery and chaotic violence, both within society and within the individual. Tragedy and Civilization begins with a study of these themes and then proceeds to detailed discussions of each of the seven plays. For this edition Segal also provides a new preface discussing recent developments in the study of Sophocles.

Marriage And Civilization

Author : William Tucker

Marriage built civilization. Will its collapse lead to our downfall? In Marriage and Civilization, Tucker takes readers on a journey through the history of the human race to demonstrate how a pattern of life-long, monogamous pairings has enabled humans to build modern civilization. Drawing extensively on biological, anthropological, and historical evidence, Tucker makes the case that marriage is not only a desirable institution for societies, it’s actually the bedrock of civilization. Tucker also examines America (and the world)’s current marriage crisis, and the factors that have led to the decline of marriage, the dramatic rise of divorce, and the epidemic of single parenthood. He draws bold predictions about what could happen to American society of marriage collapses entirely, and he sketches out the threat from polygamous groups such as fundamental Muslim sects. Polygamy, Tucker argues, not only generates discontent and disorder within a society, but promotes violence against others. Monogamous marriage is vital not only to our domestic well-being, but our survival in the face of violent enemies.
