Although they may be fluent readers - indeed, many have very precocious reading skills - individuals with autism spectrum disorders often need support for comprehension. Comprehension difficulties in readers with ASD can be subtle, qualitative, and difficult to tease out. As a result, their substantial level of risk for reading comprehension problems is often overlooked or unaddressed, and many students struggle in silence. Further aggravating the situation is the fact that otherwise competent educational professionals is both general education and special education settings have limited training and experience helping readers with ASD. This is where Drawing a Blank comes in. Using a clearly stated and well-organized approach, this practical resource provides educational professionals and parents with the tools to improve comprehension for good decoders who have reading comprehension difficulties, as well as readers who struggle with both decoding and comprehension. In keeping with current standards, the book emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based and promising practices based on thorough assessment of student's needs.

Statement of Issue/Problem:In contemporary architectural practice, designing and drawing are clearly separated from the building process. Historically, however, the two were much more closely related. The Renaissance master builder Filippo Brunelleschi exemplified the concept of an integrated design-build relationship. Today, however, AIA standard contracts stipulate a clear distinction between the designing and making through the "means and methods" clause. How can the methods of designing, drawing, and making, become integrated when the architect and builder are contractually separate parties?Construction documents, prepared by the design team, are the standard means of communication between designers and builders. Architects make construction documents that describe in detail how a building is to be constructed. This thesis explores a method of working that follows the same means of communication but explores manipulating the information provided to allow for multiple possible outcomes rather than a single "correct" result. The architect's goal would then be to create an informed series of instructions, which the builder could interpret, thus participating in design. Statement of Significance of Issue:While AIA contract documents recognize the architect as the principle author of a project, they stipulate that the contractor is solely responsible for the means and methods of construction. In the essay "Valuing Material Comprehension", James Carpenter notes this phenomenon: "In order to build efficient structures, designers rely on a narrow range of standard practices; venturing outside this range requires consultation with experts. " However, when the construction drawing gets reimagined as an informed series of operations or instructions, as Jan Olav Jensen suggests in "Precision and Tolerance," the opportunityarises for the final form to become, not only more site and method specific, but ultimately more open ended and innovative, opening the door for new experimentation in the act of making. Method of Inquiry:In exploring this method of making, various historical and contemporary precedents will be examined, parallel to an intensive series of operations that intend to explore the relationship between the mode of representation and a built result. These methods of physical research will include:Survey - done by producing a working drawing and allowing others to interpret and build it;Iteration - accomplished by exploring a set of instructions, and the variations that it could potentially generate;Drawing - the exploration of how different graphic agencies and drawing techniques may be used to represent both spatial qualities as well as technical assemblies. Expected Outcome:The thesis will seek to synthesize these findings into an experimental form of representation. The goal is to generate robust instructions for a construction assembly at an architectural scale. This assembly will be the result of a synthesized system that fuses designing, drawing and making into a single seamless process, yielding a built result that both specifically complies with the instructions and is one of many possible correct outcomes. This proposed system of construction documentation revives the possibility of a master builder mode of practice within the restrictions of today's contractual obligations.

With increased emphasis on visualization, the design process, and modern CAD technology, this edition of our popular Engineering Drawing and Design book provides readers with an approach to drafting that is consistent with the National Standards Institute (NSI) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Newly reorganized, the first half of the book focuses attention on sketching, views, descriptive geometry, dimensioning, and pictorial drawings. The second half of the book invites readers to build upon these skills as they explore manufacturing materials and processes that span all of the engineering disciplines, including: welding, fluid power, piping, electricity/electronics, HVAC, sheet metal, and more! Each chapter contains realistic examples, technically precise illustrations, problems and related tests. Step-by-step methods, plus layout guidelines for preparing technically precise engineering drawings from sketches, are also featured throughout the book to provide readers with a logical approach to setting up and completing drawing problems. Ideal for use in introductory and advanced engineering graphics programs, the extraordinarily complete and current information in this book makes it an invaluable reference for professional engineers.

A major International conference on this theme took place in January 2003. To coincide with this event, this book documents and expands upon the theme of ''drawing the process.'' Much debate and research is currently undertaken in this area and it is the intention of the book to galvanise this, while providing a vehicle for deep enquiry. The publication will firstly comprise a collection of refereed papers representing a breadth of activity and research around the issues of drawing within the broad context of art and design activity. The second dimension of the book will be an examination of t.
