Katherine Thanas was an MFA student studying painting with Richard Diebenkorn, the preeminent Californian abstract painter, when she met Shunryu Suzuki in the sixties. Soon thereafter she decided to drop painting to dedicate herself to Zen, which she did for the last forty years of her life. Fearlessly direct and endlessly curious, Katherine had a deep understanding of Zen and an affinity for the arts. Her love of literature shines through in these talks, both in her elegant prose and her vast references, from poets William Stafford and Naomi Shihab Nye to Robert Aitken's translation of the Mumonkanand Dogen. This posthumous book, and Katherine's only book, is a collection of her essential teachings taken from her dharma talks. In these short pieces, ranging on subjects from the practice of zazento the meaning of life, Katherine urges us to "develop an insatiable appetite for inner awareness, to become proficient with this mind." This slim volume is an important contribution by a serious Zen woman.

This is not a journey that was undertaken for journalistic purposes. It is a painfully honest account of a life crisis that was forced on me by my own behavior and its consequences. "As such, it requires sharing a lot of things I'm not proud of—and a few things I feel like I should regret a whole lot more than I actually do. Because, unfortunately, I am not the hero in this tale. I am the villain." So begins Neil Strauss's long-awaited follow-up to The Game, the funny and slyly instructive work of immersive journalism that jump-started the international "seduction community" and made Strauss a household name—revered or notorious—among single men and women alike. In The Truth, Strauss takes on his greatest challenge yet: Relationships. And in this wild and highly entertaining ride, he explores the questions that men and women are asking themselves every day: Is it natural to be faithful to one person for life? Do alternatives to monogamy lead to better relationships and greater happiness? What draws us to the partners we choose? Can we keep passion and romance from fading over time? His quest for answers takes him from Viagra-laden free-love orgies to sex addiction clinics, from cutting-edge science labs to modern-day harems, and, most terrifying of all, to his own mother. What he discovered changed everything he knew about love, sex, relationships, and, ultimately, himself. Searingly honest and compulsively readable, The Truth just may have the same effect on you. If The Game taught you how to meet members of the opposite sex, The Truth will teach you how to keep them.

Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novella: In a bizarre future metropolis where even the most trivial fib cannot be uttered, a man must learn to lie—or lose what he loves most Truth reigns supreme in the city-state of Veritas. Not even politicians lie, and weirdly frank notices abound—such as warning: this elevator maintained by people who hate their jobs: ride at your own risk. In this dystopia of mandatory candor, every preadolescent citizen is ruthlessly conditioned, through a Skinnerian ordeal called a “brainburn,” to speak truthfully under all circumstances. Jack Sperry wouldn’t dream of questioning the norms of Veritas; he’s happy with his life and his respectable job as a “deconstructionist,” destroying “mendacious” works of art—relics from a less honest era. But when his adored son, Toby, falls gravely ill, the truth becomes Jack’s greatest enemy. Somehow our hero must overcome his brainburn and attempt to heal his child with beautiful lies. Alternately hilarious and moving, City of Truth thoughtfully explores the pitfalls inherent in any attempt to engineer a perfect society.

As a youth born and raised in Jamaica and through some African history we were taught in school, we acquired very little knowledge of the history of black nations. I also learned and accepted a Christ-like way of life which, up to this present time, remains the major force in my life on this planet and has also given me a great feeling of passion for all people. We were financially poor but always had plenty of food and drink. As a country boy, when I left school I had no real concept of time but was acutely aware of day and night. We did not know anything about slavery but one of the homes in which I was brought up was one of many slavery camps. Some of the chains that were used to bind young children to their parents whilst they were working on the plantations later became our childhood toys. The manner in which many of us were chastised was an indication of the upbringing that our parents were handing down to us because they knew of no other way.
